Gain More Instagram Followers By Creating A More Aesthetic Profile
When it comes to curating an aesthetic social media profile, some people seem to have a natural talent for it. In the age of sponsored posts and PR boxes, we all wish to some extent that we, too, could be Instagram influencers. How does one truly curate the most follow-worthy and aesthetically pleasing Instagram profile possible? If you want to build your Instagram following or up your engagement, you don’t need a fancy camera or a certified “Instagram boyfriend.”
To turn profile visits into follows, impress potential employers, or possibly get more and more cuties sliding into your DMs, creating a beautiful Instagram page is a necessity. By following a few simple principles, you can curate a professional yet fun Instagram profile that perfectly captures your personality and will have your followers constantly double-tapping.
Choose a Great Profile Pic
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. If this phrase is true, then your profile pic is probably worth about a million words. Your profile photo is often the first thing new followers will see when they visit your page, so choosing the perfect photo couldn’t be more important. It’s important to choose a profile picture that clearly shows your face, is preferably a solo shot (meaning no friends or S/Os), and is either a front-facing selfie or taken by another person.
Try to choose a photo that you think is flattering, but still authentic to who you are. (AKA not super facetuned.) If you want to take a brand new profile pic, it’s always a good idea to put on a top that contrasts with your hair color and complements your skin tone. Sit in front of a light or a window, and snap away! When it comes to great profile pics, mirror selfies are usually a no-no, as they can come across as unprofessional and don’t show your face as clearly as a selfie or a photo taken by another person. In the iconic words of Ariana Grande, “click, click, click and post.”
Craft the Perfect Bio
The next thing that people will see when visiting your profile for the first time is your bio. There’s a number of ways to approach crafting the perfect bio. Whether you want yours to be simple, humorous, or professional, it’s always important to keep your audience in mind. I personally like to focus on my professional life in my Instagram bio and use emoji to create a bulleted list of my various professional positions. This is common practice for many professionals and Instagram influencers, as it immediately allows your followers to get a feel for where you work or your interests. Try to use a little humor, and you’ll have followers hooked at their very first read!
Figure Out Your Own Personal Aesthetic
When you’re first beginning to craft a new Instagram aesthetic, just like any other new project, it’s important to do your research. Look at profiles that you find yourself liking consistently. Do you prefer more warm, minimalist tones, or are you all about a bright and colorful feed? Scroll through your feed or “following” list and save or screenshot posts that inspire you. Another great idea is to create a mood board in your collections of saved posts that you can constantly refer back to for inspiration. Fletcher Rowe, an Elon University student who is an expert in all things social media, highlights two main points when it comes to finding motivation for new posts.
“The first tip is to follow people that inspire you. Following other people will not only give you new ideas for your own content, but engaging with them could lead to new collaborations and maybe even some new followers! Solid engagement never hurts! The second tip is to surround yourself with people that will inspire you to keep creating. Find that friend that will take your picture 100 times or help you set up that flat-lay.”
Use a Consistent Filter
The most important step to creating an aesthetic Instagram profile is to choose a filter and use it consistently in all of your photos. In editing apps like VSCO, you are able to seamlessly copy and paste edits from past photos onto new ones, allowing you to create a consistent look for all of your photos. Though some photos may need to be tweaked according to different lighting, you should aim to use similar editing levels for contrast, exposure, and saturation in every photo. Photos don’t have to look identical, but they should “go” together.
Another app that allows you to make sure your photos look amazing next to one another is Planoly. You can simulate your Instagram feed to ensure that your new post complements your past ones — it’s a total game-changer!
Mix it Up
Alternate between different types of photos. If you just posted a selfie, maybe post a cute photo of your morning latte. If you just snapped a photo of a natural landscape, consider posting a photo with friends after that. Followers want to see a variety of many different kinds of content — not just selfies! On the other end of the spectrum, people want to physically see the person they’re following. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend to take a picture for you when you’re really feeling your outfit, or take advantage of that great car window lighting.
Utilize Stories and Highlights
Curating an aesthetic Instagram profile doesn’t stop at the bio, profile pic, and feed anymore. With Stories, you’re given another opportunity to engage your followers and craft your personal brand. Though Stories are a little more free-flowing than posts — meaning they don’t have to be as carefully crafted and can be a little more spontaneous — they should nevertheless reflect your aesthetic. One way to do this is by using a consistent filter and the same text font on all of your stories. Plus, you can utilize different features like GIFs and Q&A to really engage with the people who follow you.
Show Off Your Most Confident Self
At the end of the day, the most visually-pleasing and follow-worthy profile is one where you are completely and utterly yourself. Don’t be afraid to show your personality on your social media — that is what it’s meant for! Be cautious not to give too much attention to how “well” your posts do or how many likes you receive. If every post looks like a work of art, that’s amazing. However, the best profile is one that’s authentic and relatable. Figure out what makes you feel confident, and share that with the world. Whether it be an OOTD in your New Year’s Eve ‘fit or a photo of your fuzzy socks in front of a cozy fire, post what you want — because no one wants to follow a faker.
Curating an aesthetic Instagram profile worthy of the “influencer” title isn’t easy. It can take a lot of time and effort to truly craft a “perfect” page (and, spoiler alert: there’s no such thing). However, by following these simple techniques, you can be well on your way to gaining followers and loving your feed’s aesthetic.
