Ariana Grande Let Her Exes Hear “Thank U, Next” Before Releasing It
As you all probably already know, Ariana Grande totally pulled a Taylor Swift by releasing what fans have already crowned the best breakup anthem ever. The song, titled “thank u, next,” comes hot off the heels of her split from fiancé Pete Davidson and also references her relationships with Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez, and the late Mac Miller, who passed way in September.
But, her track isn’t filled with the shadiness some people might have been expecting and Ari even revealed that her exes were all given a sneak preview of the song prior to its release.
“Thought I’d end up with Sean, but he wasn’t a match. Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh,” she opens the song before bringing up her most recent flames. “Even almost got married, and for Pete I’m so thankful. Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, ’cause he was an angel.”
With lyrics such as, “One taught me love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain,” Ariana has proven this isn’t a diss track since she makes peace with her past and her old boyfriends by thanking them. “Plus I met someone else, we havin’ better discussions. I know they say I move on too fast, but this one gon’ last ’cause her name is Ari, and I’m so good with that.”
So, after a fan joked on Twitter that the singer’s exes might be surprised to hear their names dropped in her latest single, she responded by writing, “They heard it before it came out.”

Though she didn’t mention Pete in the tweet, we’re going to assume he heard it, too. This comes right after Ariana threw Pete some shade after he brought up their quickie engagement during a Saturday Night Live promo clip. Ariana released the song a couple of days later — minutes before he appeared Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Updated.” Though he didn’t address the track, he did reveal that he would no longer discuss their relationship. He did not make one single joke and simply wished his ex the best.
“The last thing I will say is I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is it’s nobody’s business,” he said, adding, “Sometimes things just don’t work out, and that’s okay. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”
Honestly, we commend Ariana for dropping this song. She was able to get ahead of the narrative and put an end to the post-split headlines. The #Pariana story might finally have played itself out for good, but that doesn’t mean there’s any bad blood between her and Pete — or any of her exes for that matter. Instead, she’s just happy and grateful to have experienced it all and grown from it.
