Dove Cameron Explains How Disney & Her Ex Delayed The Release Of First Independent Album

So, we’ve been waiting for Disney Channel star Dove Cameron to release her own music for years now, and it seems like the wait will soon be over. We’ve heard the 23-year-old’s *ah-mazing* voice on the soundtracks for Disney’s The Descendants and Liv and Maddie, but she’s never released any independent music of her own. Today, Dove took to Twitter to explain why that was and reassure fans that her first independent musical project is coming in just a few months.

Fans reacted to the actress’s message on Twitter this morning, telling the Disney star to take all of the time she needs making her new music.

Apparently, Dove has been working on her music for a long, long time, but it keeps getting delayed due to contract negotiations and new projects. Her first album, which the uber-talented musical star recorded when she was only 15, was delayed due to her contract with Disney that granted the media giant first right of refusal and stated she’d have to make their music. In her Twitter statement, the Liv and Maddie star explained that after inking her deal with Disney she, “put off releasing my own music because i was now under contract with their label, meaning i would release THEIR music, not mine [sic].”

When Disney turned down the option to produce a record with Dove, she started working on music with her ex, Broadway star Ryan McCartan. That project became the short-lived band, The Girl and the Dreamcatcher, which released an EP, Negatives in 2016. Dove and Ryan broke up in the same year, and she started working on independent music again.

In 2018, Dove signed with the record label Sony/Disruptor and started working on a whole new album, complete with new singles and music videos! So, the final word is that Dove’s music should be coming in a couple of months. We are so excited to hear waht that Dove has been trying to produce for so long!
