Dove Cameron Shares Post About ‘Toxic People’ After Ex Ryan McCartan Claims She Cheated
Dove Cameron is *not* having it with her ex-fiance Ryan McCartan‘s claims she cheated on him while they were engaged. ICYMI: Dove’s former The Girl and the Dreamcatcher collaborator posted on his Instagram Stories that his partner of three years had “cheated on and left” him within the span of two weeks where he also got food poisoning and a certain reality star was elected president. Dove and Ryan’s breakup was in October 2016, within four months, she had confirmed her relationship with now-boyfriend Thomas Doherty.
Though Dove hasn’t specifically responded to Ryan’s allegations, she did post a cryptic Instagram Story, an ode to Thomas, and re-tweeted about how “toxic people” trying to “control other people’s perceptions” once you get them out of your life.
The original post by @BALINSKAS showed a whiteboard that read, “When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay about it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth, just like you did.” Though it doesn’t say so in the post, the quote is attributed to Jill Blakewaym an author with a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Dove called the sentiment “beautiful.”

On her personal Instagram Story, she thanked her fans for their birthday wishes (yeah, Ryan ‘outed’ her as a cheater the day after her 24th birthday), but mentioned how the new decade has changed her frame of mind.
“i’ve been do disillusioned and lost, so dark and so sad, and i only now feel like i’m beginning to find the magic again. that place where i’m not afraid of what used to leave me frozen in agonizing fear, where i can finally feel safe to lean on only myself and be whole and complete within my own skin,” she wrote in a text post.
This isn’t the first time Dove’s pointed to toxicity in her former relationship with her Liv and Maddie co-star. After a fan once commented on an Insta photo with, “Ryan,” she completed the sentence, saying “was terrible to me.” TEA. She also once said that her relationship with Ryan and her relationship with Disney is the reason she didn’t release solo music sooner.
But perhaps the most telling quote about her relationship with Ryan is one she gave during her Seventeen magazine cover story. “A lot of what I went through in that first relationship, the very low-lows, I did not make public,” she said. “I was under the impression that I had to make everything look perfect all the time and my partner definitely put that in my ear. People thought I was sharing loads, but I hardly shared anything.”
It’s pretty obvious that these two are better off separate than they are together, but it’s probably for the best that they stop taking aim at one another publicly.
