Justin Theroux Opens Up About “Heartbreaking” Jennifer Aniston Split for the First Time
It’s been nearly a year since Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston parted ways after two years of marriage and now, the actor is finally speaking out about their highly publicized divorce for the first time ever. In a new interview with The New York Times, Justin shared some insight on their split, revealing that it wasn’t as dramatic as the media made it out to be.
“The good news is that was probably the most — I’m choosing my words really carefully — it was kind of the most gentle separation, in that there was no animosity,” he told the publication. “In a weird way, just sort of navigating the inevitable perception of it is the exhausting part.”
He also cleared up any speculation that there’s bad blood between them, adding, “Again, neither one of us is dead, neither one of us is looking to throw hatchets at each other. It’s more like, it’s amicable. It’s boring, but, you know, we respected each other enough that it was as painless as it could be.”
In fact, Justin hinted that he and Jennifer may still be friends. “It was heartbreaking only in the sense that the friendship would not be the same, as far as just the day-to-day,” he said. “But the friendship is shifting and changing, you know, so that part is something that we’re both very proud of.”
Move over Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin because these two just redefined consciously uncoupling. We’re glad to hear it, too. After the year of celebrity breakups we’ve had, Justin and Jennifer’s split was one of the toughest ones to swallow. The pair first started dating in 2011 and wed in 2015 in a low-key ceremony, but ultimately called it quits at the end of 2017.
“We have decided to announce our separation,” they said in a joint statement last February. “This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.”
“Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly,” they added.
Following the split, the couple has remained relatively tight-lipped about what went down, with Jennifer breaking her silence only to set the record straight about reports claiming she was “heartbroken.” “The misconceptions are ‘Jen can’t keep a man,’ and ‘Jen refuses to have a baby because she’s selfish and committed to her career.’ Or that I’m sad and heartbroken,” she told InStyle magazine in August. “First, with all due respect, I’m not heartbroken. And second, those are reckless assumptions.”
Of course, she’s referring to the misconstrued notion that all started when Brad Pitt allegedly had an affair with Angelina Jolie in 2005. This “Jen can’t keep a man” narrative has been following the Friends actress aroud ever since. However, that wasn’t the case with Justin. The pair was happy while their relationship lasted but unfortunately, even some great things must come to an end.
We’re just glad the two can remain friends!
