Why can’t people just let Lizzo revel in the success of her number one song, “Truth Hurts,” and be done with it? The singer is facing plagiarism allegations yet again for the hit song and it looks like things are about to get ugly. On Tuesday, a producer named Justin Raisen posted a lengthy post to Instagram in which he demanded credit for himself and his brother for the iconic lyric “I just took a DNA test turns I’m 100% that bitch” along with a video to back up claims that he contributed to the creation of the song.

In the post, Justin claims that back in 2017, he and his brother Jeremiah wrote a song called “Healthy” with Lizzo, Jesse St John, and Yves Rothman at their studio. He alleges that the lyrics “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch” were taken from “Healthy” and used in “Truth Hurts.”

“We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of ‘Healthy’ (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in ‘Truth Hurts,'” Justin wrote. He further shared that he “reached out to Ricky Reed and Lizzo’s team about fixing it, we put the song in dispute in 2017 when it came out.”

Justin went on to say that he and his brother are only seeking 5% each of the profits from the song and that “the last thing we want to do is throw any negativity toward Lizzo’s momentum and movement as a cultural figure. If we believe in what she’s preaching, believing in ourselves & our own voices is something we thought she’d understand.”

In his post, Justin also made reference to previous allegations of plagiarism that came from singer Mina Lioness a little over a year ago. In February 2017, Mina tweeted “I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% that bitch,” seven months before Lizzo dropped “Truth Hurts” in September 2017. When fans brought the tweet to Lizzo’s attention in February 2018, the singer denied copying Mina, writing: “I’ve never seen this before in my life. That’s crazy. But u know, there’s 10 BILLION ppl on the planet. The odds of multiple people having the same idea are VERY high [sic].” The 31-year-old continued to tweet directly at Mina, saying she never saw her viral tweet.

Justin Raisen refuted Lizzo’s claims that she never saw Mina’s tweet in his post by saying: “A meme of that came up in our writing session & inspired the lyric and melody we wrote together. If Ricky and Lizzo’s team decide to settle this dispute with us, we would like to share some of the proceeds with Mina for her influence on ‘Healthy.'”

Mina backed up Justin’s claims last night with an Insta post that showed a screenshot of her tweet from 2017, and we hate to say it but, it looks legit.

Lizzo is yet to comment on Justin and Jeremiah’s claims, but her attorney Cynthia S. Arato has since refuted them to The New York Times. In a statement, Cynthia said: “The Raisens are not writers of ‘Truth Hurts.’ They did not collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create this song, and they did not help write any of the material that they now seek profit from, which is why they expressly renounced any claim to the work, in writing, months ago.”

We hope the allegations against Lizzo are false, but things aren’t looking great for the singer. Read Justin’s full post below.

The Truth about “Truth Hurts” On April 11th, 2017, we wrote a song called “Healthy” w/ Lizzo, Jesse St John, and Yves Rothman at our studio. “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch” was taken from “Healthy” and used in “Truth Hurts”. We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of “Healthy” (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in “Truth Hurts”. After reaching out to Ricky Reed and Lizzo’s team about fixing it, we put the song in dispute in 2017 when it came out. We’ve tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time. Coming forward publicly to family, friends, artists, and colleagues seems to be the only way at this point in relieving some of our emotional distress caused by this. The last thing we want to do is throw any negativity toward Lizzo’s momentum and movement as a cultural figure. If we believe in what she’s preaching, believing in ourselves & our own voices is something we thought she’d understand. Shout out to the singer Mina Lioness ( @minalioness ) for tweeting “I just did a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch”. A meme of that came up in our writing session & inspired the lyric and melody we wrote together. If Ricky and Lizzo’s team decide to settle this dispute with us, we would like to share some of the proceeds with Mina for her influence on Healthy. The clip below shows a video & photos from the day we wrote “Healthy” along with the comparisons between the two works. All the Love, Justin & Jeremiah Raisen #lizzo #truthhurts #healthy #billboard
