Madelaine Petsch has become a household name ever since she began starring on The CW show Riverdale. The 25-year-old plays Riverdale ring-leader Cheryl Blossom, a bad*ss chick who’s extremely confident and not afraid to speak her mind. Madelaine’s off-screen personality shares a lot of qualities with her Riverdale character, but she wasn’t always that way. In a new interview with Seventeen, the actress opened up about how her confidence has thrived thanks to the show and the presence of her female co-stars, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Vanessa Morgan.

“When I first moved to LA, I thought I always had to have makeup on and look perfect, because what if I ran into a casting director in the grocery store,” she told the publication. “Now, I’m around so many empowering women. We remind each other to be funny and embrace who we are. I don’t feel any pressure about being perfect on social media anymore. I’m showing my true self all the time. I’m just being me.”

Madelaine says playing Cheryl has made her more confident and has taught her how to love the features she was once self-conscious about, including her gorgeous red hair. “I think Cheryl has helped me really love my red hair. Finally, my hair and I have a great relationship,” she said.

In the interview, Madelaine also touched on the loss of the late Luke Perry, who played Fred Andrews on Riverdale. “Luke was my oracle throughout Riverdale,” she said. “He was on 90210 and had done all this work, so anytime I had any questions, he opened his door to me. He was such a kind and loving soul, and he was so generous. He was the kind of actor that gave you everything when he worked with you.”

She continued to discuss the moments she misses the actor, who died last March, the most. “The hardest thing for me was that every Comic-Con, Luke would call me in the morning and he would say, ‘I have a pimple, I need you to cover it.’ And he would come to my room and make me cover his pimple. This last Comic-Con was really hard because I didn’t get my phone call.”

“I’ve learned from Luke to be a bright light for people because you never know who needs it,” she added. “Just like I did.”

Madelaine appeared on the latest digital cover of Seventeen just ahead of the season four premiere of Riverdale, which will air October 9th at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
