Melissa Benoist Speaks On Public Response To Her Intimate Partner Violence Video At Supergirl Event
Melissa Benoist and her Supergirl costars have successfully completely one hundred episodes of the hit CW show and last night, they hit the red carpet in Vancouver to celebrate the accomplishment. While talking to ET Canada, she talked about how proud she is to be “a part of [the] club” of women superheroes on TV and in movies right now like Batwoman and Captain Marvel.
But it was also Melissa’s first public appearance since the 31-year-old actress spoke out about her experience with intimate partner violence with her ex. In the 14-minute video posted to Instagram, Melissa detailed the horrific beatings that she suffered at the hands of a past love, whom many believe to be her ex-husband Blake Jenner due to the timeline and injuries described, though Melissa did not name him specifically in the video.
“It was a very overwhelming weekend when I posted that video. But the response has been wonderful and I wanted to share so that I could help as many people as I possibly could… My only wish is that [I’m helping] and from what I’ve been seeing it’s been very positive.”
Melissa’s current husband, Chris Wood was at last night’s event supporting his leading lady — which is fitting considering the two met on set of Supergirl. Chris has also been supporting Melissa on social media for the past few weeks very vocally.
MY FELLOW MEN: let's agree to teach our children, friends, and ourselves that it is never okay to communicate our emotions of anger or frustration physically. Violence does not equal strength.

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m going to kiss my wife and hold her tenderly. All day. And every day. How do YOU show love? #IStandWithMelissa
