As reported girlfriend Camila Cabello is getting dragged on Twitter for her alleged history of racist comments, especially in light of Normani‘s new single, “Motivation,” Shawn Mendes is getting slammed for the same — but this time it’s because he personally responded to a fan question regarding “hurtful … tweets” in the past that were posted on his account.

“I don’t want you to take any offense to [this question], I just wanted to do it for black Twitter, black Shawn stans everywhere out there. In the past, there’s a lot of kind of ignorant tweets you could say, hurtful insensitive tweets that you tweeted before — I think recently it’s been deleted … but why has it never been acknowledged?” the fan asked during a tour Q&A.

“I didn’t mean to not acknowledge it. I just think that a lot of things need to be moved on from. But also I had friends when I was like 14, who would take my phone and post things of them and they thought it was funny that I had 2,000 followers … at the time, I was just not thinking about it. I had no idea I was going to have 50 million followers. It doesn’t make it any better. But … I apologize for everything insensitive that I said in the past… that’s not my personality,” he responded. Shawn then accepted a “Black Lives Matter” flag that the fan brought for him.

Though he did seem to fully address the controversy, some people don’t think his words are enough to make up for his casual use of the n-word on Instagram in the past, and tweets including one in which he allegedly wrote: “Light skin girls>>>>>>.” This oh no they didn’t blog post has #thereceipts. Some fans, though, think that Shawn and Camila have done enough to prove they’re not racist or colorist and people who are still up in arms should take a chill pill.

Shawn surely shouldn’t have put the blame on his 14-year-old friends, but he did apologize for “everything insensitive” he said in the past and since actions speak louder than words, we’ll just have to hope that he waves his Black Lives Matter flag proudly and starts advocating more deeply for the communities he’s offended.
