Demi Lovato isn’t getting a lot of new fans this week. After the American singer went to Israel for free in exchange for social media posts (a sponsorship she didn’t initially disclose), Demi got bashed on social media for appearing to side with Israel in the Israeli – Palestinian conflict, a struggle that kills hundreds and injures tens of thousands every year.

I am an American singer. I was raised Christian and have Jewish ancestors. When I was offered an amazing opportunity to visit the places I’d read about in the Bible growing up, I said yes. There is something absolutely magical about Israel.  I’ve never felt such a sense of spirituality or connection to God…something I’ve been missing for a few years now.  Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life. This trip has been so important for my well-being, my heart, and my soul.  I’m grateful for the memories made and the opportunity to be able to fill the God-sized hole in my heart. Thank you for having me, Israel ?

Demi half-apologized for posting the ignorant social media post after she claimed she had no idea about the “potential backlash” the Instagram would cause. Eventually though, she doubled-down on the initial post saying that as an “American singer” she had no right to have an opinion on the conflict. She allegedly sent a voice memo to a fan who questioned her, saying, “I’m not supporting a f*cking regime, so let it go.” In an IG comment, she also wrote, “Okay but do y’all realize, I don’t have an opinion on middle eastern conflicts more is it my place to have one being an American singer and you’re asking me to choose a side? [sic]” She continued, “I will not choose a side. I went to a place, for religious purposes, THAT’S IT … clearly I can’t win with you unless I do what YOU want me to [sic].”

Now, other celebrities are putting in their two cents about the backlash. Zara Larsson took to Twitter to say that Demi is “a part of the oppressive side” if she’s not picking a side. She later clarified, “This is hands down not a post directed only to demi, if thats what youre referring to, but more to all the people who thinks their option to be disengaged in politics is anything but privilege [sic]”

Well at least we know where Zara stands!
