Zendaya is a pretty unproblematic celebrity. She’s never publicly feuded with anyone, doesn’t have any old racist/homophobic tweets (that we’re aware of), and tends to be a pretty positive influence on her fans. Still, if you look back far enough through any celebrity’s social media channels you’re going to find something that’s a little questionable. That’s what happened to Zendaya this week when a Twitter user came across an Instagram photo the 23-year-old posted back in 2012.

Twitter user joycicouture shared this screenshot from Zendaya’s Instagram on Twitter yesterday. The actress shared a selfie on the platform, back when she was 16 years old, with the caption: “Truly confident girls show their naked faces, not their naked bodies.”

Despite the fact that the photo was posted some time ago, people are still pretty shocked that Zendaya would post something so judgey on Instagram. In recent years, the actress has spoken a lot about self-love and body positivity and has even called out a magazine for photoshopping images of her.

Fans of the star have come to her defense on Twitter by acknowledging the fact that she posted the photo seven years ago, and also that she’s since deleted the caption.

Zendaya hasn’t responded to the criticism, and we highly doubt she ever will, considering the post was dragged up from when she was a teenager and she’s been an outspoken advocate for women’s empowerment in the years since.
