We love watching our favorite stars fall in love on TV. From Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones to Leonard and Penny on The Big Bang Theory, some TV couples stay in our hearts forever. But despite being invested in their on-screen romances, we often know very little about the personal lives of the actors and actresses we see on the silver screen. From swept off of their feet love stories like Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas to contentious break-ups, here's the scoop on the IRL love lives of 40 of TV's biggest stars.
Matthew Gray Gubler plays the soft-spoken and totally swoon-worthy criminal profiler Dr. Spencer Reid on CBS's Criminal Minds. On the show, Spencer Reid is a socially awkward psychologist who doesn't form romantic relationships. In real life, Matthew Gray Gubler has been linked to multiple women, including actress Kat Dennings and singer Taylor Swift. While we doubt that Matthew ever seriously dated Taylor, the two were linked in 2013. Some sharp fans spotted that Matthew had traveled to New England (where Taylor has her beach house) over the 4th of July. He later tweeted a picture of himself wearing facepaint that seemed pretty similar to the kind Taylor had at her 4th of July party. So, are there any Taylor Swift song's written about the Criminal Minds actor? We guess we'll never know.
Thomas Gibson played Aaron Hotchner, the chief of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit on Criminal Minds from 2005 to 2016. On the show, Thomas's character is married to his high school sweetheart but later divorces her because he's too dedicated to catching bad guys. If this sounds familiar that's because it is the plot of nearly every cop show ever made. In real life, Thomas Gibson married his wife Christine Gibson in 1993. They had three children together. In 2014, the couple separated and their divorce was finalized in 2018. There is no word on if Thomas is currently single or not.
Lauren Cohan played Maggie Greene on the post-apocolyptic zombie show The Walking Dead from 2011 to 2018. On The Walking Dead Lauren's character fell in love with and married Glenn Rhee, who was played by actor Steven Yeun. During their on-screen romance, many fans believed that Lauren and Steven were an actual item. Lauren has since rejected those rumors, saying that she was often spotted out with her co-workers because they all lived so close to each other during filming. Lauren left the show to star in the ABC series Whiskey Cavalier. She has never publicly confirmed a relationship.

Norman Reedus has done it all. He starred in the cult classic film The Boondock Saints. He's modeled for Prada. But he's most famous for playing character Darly Dixson on The Walking Dead. Someone who often keeps to himself, Daryl doesn't have any romantic interests on the show. Norman however, married actress Diane Kruger in 2016. She separated from her long term partner, actor Joshua Jackson in the same year. Diane is best know for her roles starring in the film Inglorious Basterds as well as the National Treasure franchise. The coupled welcomed a son together in 2018.

English actor Andrew Lincoln played the fan-favorite character Rick Grimes on AMC's The Walking Dead from 2010 to 2018. On the show, Rick has a complicated relationship with his wife, Lori, who dies on season three. In real life, Andrew Lincoln is married to Gael Anderson, the daughter of Jethro Tull singer and flautist Ian Anderson. The coupled was married in 2006 and they have three children together. Fans might not know that Andrew's real last name is actually Clutterbuck. We can't really blame him for adopting a different stage name, Clutterbuck is hilarious.
Joseph Fiennes plays the patriarchal and terrifying Commanders Fred Waterford on Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. On the show, Commander Waterford is married to the reserved and callous Serena Joy. They make the perfect complicit in the patriarchy white couple. In real life, Joseph Fiennes (who is super fine, see what we did there?) is married to the Spanish model María Dolores Diéguez. The couple tied the knot in a picturesque Italian wedding in 2009. They have two daughters.
Handmaid's Tale star Alexis Bledel has starred on multiple massively popular TV shows. She got her start as Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls in 2000. She then went on do a three episode stint on the acclaimed TV drama Mad Men. During her three episode arc, Alexis met Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser. The two started dating in 2012 and were married in 2014. The couple welcomed their first child in 2015. Now that Alexis is on a show with former Mad Men star Elizabeth Moss, we wonder if the couple hosts Mad Men reunions at their home, and if so, could they please post about it on social media.
While her character Serena Joy is married to Joseph Fiennes's character Commander Waterford on The Handmaid's Tale, actress Yvonne Strahovski is married to fellow actor Tim Loden IRL. The actress confirmed the news on the red carpet at the 2017 Emmys. The couple dated for six years before they tied the knot. It was frequently rumored that Yvonne was dating her Chuck costar Zachary Levi during Chuck's five season run, but these rumors were never confirmed. Yvonne said that on her wedding day to Tim it was so hot that she and Tim jumped into the lake near where they had their wedding while still in their wedding clothes. The couple had a baby boy in 2018.
Elizabeth Moss has dominated pop culture by playing some of the strongest female characters from the past two decades on TV. While her characters on The Handmaid's Tale and Mad Men aren't exactly known for their ideallic romantic lives, Elizabeth Moss has had a little bit better luck in her real life. In 2009, Elizabeth married comedien Fred Armisen after meeting him on the set of SNL when her Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm was hosting. The two filed for divorce only eight months later, and Elizabeth had some choice words to say about their relatioship, calling it "traumatic and awful and horrible." Yikes. Thankfully since their split, the actress has had better luck in the love department. She is reportedly dating someone. Though she won't say who, we can definitively rule out fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise.
Because NCIS star Cote de Pablo and her costar Michael Weatherly had such strong chemistry on screen, many fans of the criminal procedural thought that they must be dating off screen. But the two stars never actually dated while they were on NCIS. In fact, for most of the time that Cote de Pablo was on the show, she was in a serious relationship with actor Diego Serrano. The pair dated from 2004 to 2015. It is unknown if Cote de Pablo is dating someone right now. The actress previously said that she would be open to returning to NCIS as her character Ziva is not actually dead.
Not only is Michael Weatherly not dating his former NCIS coworker, Cote de Pablo, he's married to someone else entirely. In 2009 Michael married his second wife, Serbian doctor, Bojana Jankovic. She is, in our humble opinion, totally out of the actor's league. Not only is she completely gorgeous, but she's also a doctor, while Michael Weatherly sometimes plays lawyers on network TV. The two seem to be going strong. Bojana stood by her husband's side when he was accused of sexual harassment on the set of his CBS legal drama Bull earlier this year. It must be true love when you don't care that your husband's actions caused his network to pay out a 9.5 million dollar settlement.
Mark Harmon plays yet another NCIS character with a complicated romantic life. But in real life, the actor's romantic life is pretty much drama-free. The actor married his wife, Pam Dawber, in 1987 and the two of them have been together ever since. Recently, Mark Harmon's on-set conduct has come under scrutiny. Earlier this year, actress Pauley Perrette said that the reason she left the hit show was because Mark physically threatened her and assaulted her after she objected to him bringing his dog to the show's set. Though their characters are close on the show, the two actors allegedly did not film scenes together for close to two years. Mark Harmon has not commented on the issue.
Before Pauley Perrette left NCIS this year after 15 seasons, she played one of the most popular characters on primetime television. Though the storylines involving her NCIS character, Abby, mostly focused on the father-daughter like relationship between Abby and her boss, Jethro Gibbs, Pauley Perrette has found romantic sucess in real life. From 2000 to 2006, Pauley was married to Canadian musician Coyote Shivers. (We're not making that up! That's seriously his real name!) The couple separated in 2004 and finalized their divorce two years later. Pauley is thought to be engaged to former British Royal Marine Thomas Arklie. The couple said that they would marry after gay marriage was legalized in the United States. If they've tied the knot since 2015, they haven't made that information public.
Actor Eric Dane played the beloved doctor McSteamy on TV juggernaut Grey's Anatomy from 2006 to 2012. Fans were devastated when McSteamy and his one true love Lexi Grey left the show after a tragic accident. (We will never forgive and we will never forget.) In real life, Eric Dane was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart from 2004 to 2018. The couple had two daughters together, one born in 2010 and the second born in 2011. Since they've split, the actor hasn't confirmed that he's in a relationship with anyone, although he was recently spotted out with a mystery woman. He's now on HBO's Euphoria playing a *very* different role than McSteamy.
Scottish actor Kevin McKidd is best known for playing Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey's Antatomy. Dr. Hunt's complicated romantic history on Grey's started with his instant attraction to Cristina Yang. (Literally, everyone on Grey's Anatonmy has a complicated romantic history, because if you're not working in a high-stress environment with three of your exes, what's even the point?) He then got involved with both Amelia Shepard and Teddy Altman. Off-screen, Kevin McKidd was married to Jane Parker from 1999 to 2016. Together he and Jane have one daughter and one son. He married chef Arielle Goldrath in 2018 and the couple welcomed a son in the same year.
Justin Chambers has played the lovable but rough around the edges Dr. Alex Karev on Grey's Anatomy for fifteen seasons. At this point, he's basically like that dinosaur in the book All My Friends Are Dead. Unlike his character's uneven romantic life on the show, Justin Chambers has been in a dedicated relationship with his wife since before Grey's started. In 1993, Justin married Keisha Chambers whom he met through his work as a model in the early 90s. They have five children and two dogs together. Finally, a reason to believe in love!
It was Patrick Dempsey as Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd who first taught us how to pine wistfully. We owe a debt of gratitude to Patrick Dempsey for his perfect hair and also for making us briefly consider going to medical school. While Derek and Meredith's love story on Grey's Anatomy will always stand out to us as the perfect modern-day love story, Patrick Dempsey's real-life relationship with his wife is pretty swoon-worthy as well. Patrick married makeup artist Jillian Fink in 1999. The couple has three children together. Jillian filed for divorce in January 2014 amid rumors he had an affair with a Grey's intern, but the couple got back together later that year and officially called off their divorce in 2016.

Who's having a better year than Sandra Oh? No one. The actress scored her first break out role on Grey's Anatomy in 2006 as surgeon Cristina Yang. She left the series in 2015. In 2018, she scored the role of Eve Polastri on critically acclaimed series Killing Eve. She then hosted the Golden Globes and generally stole everyone's hearts all over again. Sandra Oh divored her husband, director Alexander Payne in 2006. She's been notoriously secret about her personal relationships since, but internet sleuths are pretty sure that she's in a long term relationship with photographer Lev Rukhin.
As Meredith Grey on Grey's Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo was half of the dramatic pairing of Meredith and McDreamy. In real like, Ellen Pompeo's love life is not so dramatic, although it does involve a great meet-cute. Ellen met her husband, Chris Ivery, in the grocergy store in LA in 2003. (That actually happens? We thought it was a myth!) The pair dated after six months of being friends and secretly married in a civil ceremony in New York City. Then-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was their legal witness. (This is literally a romantic comedy! Someone call Netflix!) They have three children together.
Did you know that Richard Belzer's run as Detective John Munch on Homicide and Law and Order: SVU means that he currently holds the record for the longest running live-action TV character? No? Well, now you do. Detective Munch might be a renknown conspiracy theorist and loner, but in real life, Richard Belzer has been married to his wife actress Harlee McBride since 1985. The two were introduced by friends in 1981. Richard Belzer is also a cousin of famous actor Harry Winkler, proving that it is a small word after all.
Christopher Meloni played the troubled detective Elliot Stabler for twelve seasons on the hit NBC police drama Law and Order: SVU. On the show, he had buckets of sexual tension with his partner cop, Olivia Benson, played by the magnificent Mariska Hargitay. Though the two were never an item, they were close friends. Christopher Meloni married production designer Doris Sherman Meloni in 1995. When he and Doris had their second child, son Dante, they named Christopher's Law and Order: SVU costar Mariska Hargitay his godmother.
Is there anything Ice-T can't do? The 61-year-old is an actor, a rapper, record producer, and author. But perhaps, he is best known for playing Sergeant Fin Tutuola on Law and Order: SVU. In addition to playing the beloved tough-guy detective, Ice-T is also known for the reality TV show Ice Loves Coco, which documented the day-to-day lives of Ice and his wife, Coco Austin. The show was canceled after three seasons in 2014, but Ice-T's marriage to Coco lives on. The two were married in 2002 and are still together. Their first child was born in 2015.
Mariska Hargitay has been starring on Law and Order:SVU as Detective Olivia Benson for 20 years! That's over 400 episodes! The accomplished actress has founded her own charitable foundation and even had the honor of having Taylor Swift name a cat after her. Few people know that Mariska is actually married to a SVU costar! She met her husband, actor Peter Hermann in 2002 when he guest starred on the show as a defense attorney. The two actors married in 2004. They've been married for an incredible 18 years, which makes them one of the longest-running couples on this list.
This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown has recently burst into the spotlight with moving performances in both the NBC drama and the FX series American Crime Story. He also became the first African American actor to win a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in 2018, which is an amazing accomplishment. In addition to being a great actor, Sterling is also super smart! The actor went to Stanford University, where he met his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe during his freshman year. Ryan is also an actor, and the two have been married since 2007.
As part of the This Is Us cast, Chrissy Metz became another breakout star when the NBC drama premiered in 2016 and immediately became a fan-favorite show. Chrissy plays Kate Pearson. Kate and her husband Toby struggle with infertility on the show. In real life, Chrissy divorced her husband journalist Martyn Eaden in 2013. Since beginning to work on This Is Us, she has been rumored to be in a relationship with one of the show's cameramen and has also been linked to Hal Rosenfeld. It's believed that her relationship with Hal started in 2018.
Mandy Moore experienced something of a career resurgance when she was cast on This Is Us, on which she plays matriarch Rebecca Pearson. The singer had previously released two albums and starred in both The Princess Diaries and Disney's Tangled. Fans were confused when Mandy's career suddenly slowed in 2008 around the time that she married singer-songwriter Ryan Adams. The couple divorced in 2016, and Mandy answered many of her fans' questions in 2019, when she claimed that the pause in her career was due to her ex-husband's abuse. Mandy started dating Taylor Goldsmith shortly after she separated from Ryan. The two are now married — happily. A Disney princess needs her happy ending!
Actor Milo Ventimiglia has starred in many hit TV shows, including Gilmore Girls, Heroes, and This Is Us. Though the 41-year-old actor is currently linked to marketing coordinator Kelly Egarian, who works for the designer Stella McCartney, he has a reputation for dating his coworkers. From 2002 to 2006, he dated his Gilmore Girls costar Alexis Bledel. He then dated his Heroes costar Hayden Panettiere from 2006 to 2008. Their relationship made waves, as he was 30 and she was only 18 when it first started.
The Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco has been one of the highest paid actresses on TV since 2014, when she and her The Big Bang Theory costars started making one million dollars per episode. Despite her steady presence on our TV screen as the lovable Penny, Kaley has had an uneven romantic life. Cuoco dated costar Johnny Galecki for two years before breaking it off and becoming engaged to Josh Resnik. Her enagement to Josh ended before the two got hitched. In 2013, Kaley married pro-tennis player Ryan Sweeting. Their marriage ended in 2016. In 2018, she became engaged to equestrian Karl Cook, son of billionare Scott Cook.
As Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory, actress Melissa Rauch stole the hearts of fans with her portrayal of the quirky microbiologist who eventually married aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz. In real life, Melissa's voice is much less annoying than her character's signature high-pithed squeel and she is married to writer Winston Rauch. In 2017, the couple announced the birth of a baby girl and also disclosed that Melissa had previously suffered a miscarriage.
Johnny Galecki played the beloved character Leonard Hofstadter on the massively sucessful The Big Bang Theory. In one of TV's most beloved and long winding love stories, the nerdy Leonard married his long time love Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco, on season nine. Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco dated for two years. Though the couple quietly broke up in 2010, they remained friends and coworkers for the rest of the show's run. Johnny has had some serious girlfriend since, and he is currently dating Alaina Meyer, 20+ years his junior, and the two are expecting a baby.
Mayim Bialik has had a long and varied career. In the 1980s and the 1990s, she was a child actress and starred on the NBC sitcom Blossom. She then took a break from acting in order to go to school at UCLA in California and earn her BA and a PhD in neuroscience. In 2010, she joined the cast of Big Bang Theory as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, a neuroscientist and the love interest for character Sheldon Cooper. Mayim was married to Michael Stone from 2003 to 2012. In 2018, the actress announced that she had broken up with her unnamed boyfriend of five years.
Sheldon Cooper, as played by actor Jim Parsons on the The Big Bang Theory is one of the most popular and enduring characters on TV. On the show, Sheldon had a slow burn romance with fellow scientist Amy Farrah Fowler. In his real life, Jim Parsons is married to art director Todd Spiewak. The couple tied the knot in 2017 after over ten years together. They split their time between homes in New York City and Los Angeles.
If you put money down that Stark sibling Bran Stark ended up on the Iron Throne at the end of HBO's hit Game of Thrones, you could have made some serious money. Although no one thought that he was seriously coming for the crown, Isaac Hempstead Wright has been one of our favorite actors on the series since it started. Issac is only 20 years old, and now that he's got one incredibly successful series under his belt, his future is bright. If you're one of those people who has never seen an episode of GoT you might still have a chance with the actor. After the series ended, Issac revealed that his unnamed girlfriend has never seen an episode of the series.
As one of the two arrogant, incestuous, and beautuful Lannister twins on Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played one of our favorite nuanced characters on the entire series. Jamie broke our hearts when he returned to die with his sister/lover Cersei despite his slow growing romantic connections with Brienne of Tarth. In real life, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is equally faithful, though not in like, a gross way. He has been married to Danish singer Sascha Nukâka Motzfeldt since 1997.
For eight seasons, we loved to hate Cersei Lannister, the evil queen played perfectly by Lena Headey on Game of Thrones. Though we questioned her morals and mostly despised her goals, we had to admire Cersei's refusal to ever give up. Her most redeeming quality was frequently cited as her devotion to her children and her brother Jamie, who she loved way more than a brother. In her off screen romantic life, Lena was married to Peter Paul Loughran from 2007 to 2013. She married her second husband, Dan Cadan in 2018.
We're still upset about how things ended for Emilia Clarke's character Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, thannk you verry much. During the show, fans loved her on screen romance with Jon Snow, as well as her on set friendship with actor Kit Harington who played Jon. Though the two had a fun friendship, the pair never dated. Emilia is extremelty private about her personal life. During her time in the spotlight, she has never had a public relationship though she opened up about dating Seth MacFarlane after they had already split.
If there was any doubt that Peter Dinklage was one of our favorite actors before Game of Thrones there's absolutely no doubt after his eight seasons at Tyrion, everyone's favorite sardonic, wine-obsessed Lannister. On the show Tyrion is a really, really terrrible boyfriend (to put it mildly). Although romantic sucess isn't one of his strong suits, we were excited to see Tyrion get what he deserved in the season finale. Thankfully, Peter Dinklage has had more romantic sucess in real life. He's been married to theater director Erica Schmidt since 2005. They have two children together.

We all know by now that the most important off-screen relationship that Maisie Williams has is her friendship with costar Sophie Turner. On screen sisters and real life BFFs, the two have openly spoken about how close they are to each other. Romantically, the young actress was linked to former classmate Ollie Jackson, though they seem to have broken up. Maisie has been seen out and about with Ruben Selby, the communications director of the app Daisie, which Maisie co-founded.
Kit Harington met his future wife Rose Leslie on the set of Game of Thrones when their respective characters fell in love on the show. The two have been in a relationship since the show's second season. When Rose left the show after it's fourth season, their real life relationship contintued. The two announced their engagement in The Times in 2017. The pair got married in Rose's family castle (yeah, they have a castle) in 2018.
Nobody had a better glow up than Sansa Stark, played by the lovely Sophie Turner. Sansa started on Game of Thrones as an immature teenager who was easily entranced by appearances and ended the show as the Queen in the North. May we all be granted the same kind of wisdom as we age. Off screen, Sophie struck up a romance with musician Joe Jonas. The two were married in a quickie ceremony in Vegas after the Billboard Music Awards in May of 2019. Joe credited the actress with being a force behind the reunification of the Jonas Brothers and for that we are eternally grateful.
