It's finally happening! Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello's long-rumored relationship, affectionately nicknamed "Shawmila" by their biggest fans, is real, and now we have the pictures to prove it. This loved-up couple has been caught PDA-ing everywhere, whether it's enjoying a romantic Fourth of July at Nobu on the Pacific Ocean of making out (with tongue!) in the Atlantic. We've taken a look back at their journey from their humble beginnings as BFFs opening for Austin Mahone's tour to BF/GFs whose latest collab topped the charts in twenty-two countries. We don't care if you think it's all a PR stunt — we know true love when we see it.
Shawn and Camila met while opening up for Austin Mahone’s 2014 tour alongside The Vamps. Things were a little different back then. Shawn was still best-known as a Vine star, Camila was still in Fifth Harmony, and she was romantically attached to the tour headliner himself, Austin. In an adorable interview with V Magazine, the pair reminisced on their first impressions of each other, with Shawn remembering Camila as being "out of her mind" doing cartwheels outside of the tour bus, while Shawn was more of an loner. Apparently, Camila was the only one who actually made the effort to talk to him — which is saying something because she was with a band of four other women who seemingly iced him.
The first ~official~ confirmation that these two were best buds was when Camila tweeted her "Shawnyboy" about how much she would miss him (presumably during a break on tour), telling the then-MAGCON boy that he rocks, but he would rock more if he laughed when she said "uteruses before duderuses." That joke is also a nice reminder that Camila and Shawn were 17 and 16 (respectively) when their romance began to blossom. We're pretty sure this is also the first recorded instance of Camila telling Shawn she loves him (or, we guess, she "ILY" him).
Being up-and-coming stars is a hard night's work. Shawn and Camila are taking a quick snooze on each other's shoulders here at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, where their goofy vibes backstage set the tone for years of "friendship" to come. Behind-the-scenes photos of the pair playing around with balloons hit a little different know that we basically have confirmation these two have been writing their songs about each other for half a decade. Camila is set to take the stage at iHeart again in 2019, and we're hoping Shawn joins her to recreate the magic. This is where relationship rumors, like these from E! News, first began.
Speaking of relationship rumors, the couple's first relationship ~denial~ came soon after in September 2015, when Shawn talked to E! News on the red carpet at iHeartRadio Music Festival. Shawn totally crashed Camila's interview, and after some so not-subtle flirty banter, the reporter rightfully asked Shawn and Camila if they were more than just friends. Shawn responded that they couldn't date because "Spanish and Canadian don't really mix," but Camila joking about Shawn being jealous of Austin while they were all on tour, "seething rage and crying blood," honestly made it seem like the lady doth-ed protest too much.
"Señorita" wasn't Shawn and Camila's first official collab. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" came out in 2015 as part of the re-release for Shawn's debut album, Handwritten, and photos from their sexy, rainy video shoot have been empowering Shawmila shippers for years. Joint press appearances in support of the single took their suspiciously close friendship well into the mainstream, and although it only reached number twenty on the U.S. and Canadian Hot 100 charts, it's been certified Platinum in four countries including Canada and 2x Platinum in the United States.
As part of their press tour for "I Know What You Did Last Summer," Shawn and Camila appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, and the British charmer picked up on some couple-y vibes from the BFFs. The pair both denied that they were together, but they each accused the *other* of rejecting romantic advances. Explaining how they'd managed to never make out, Shawn said that Camila swerves him off every time he tries to make a move, while Camila countered that Shawn had always friend-zoned her by referring to her as "kid." Notice neither of them claimed to be uninterested — there's no way these two didn't hook up the minute cameras stopped rolling.
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" won two iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards and a People’s Choice award, and Shawmila literally held hands at People’s Choice when they went to accept their award onstage. Maybe the conspiracy theorists are right and their PR teams have a lot of fun trolling Shawmila stans, but this cute display of solidarity looks pretty boo'd up to us. Name one pair of hormonal teenagers you've met that hold hands in public and aren't trying to make out behind the bleachers, okay? You can't.
In case we ever forget where Shawn made a name for himself, the "If I Can't Have You" singer was once the undisputed king of six-second covers on Vine, may it Rest In Peace. Outside of their official collabs, Shawn and Camila have toyed around with covers just for fun because a couple of best friends? who plays together, stays together. In one March 2017 YouTube video, another site where Shawn reigned supreme, Shawmila did a short and sweet thirty second cover of Ed Sheeran's love ballad, "Kiss Me," emphasis on the "sweet."
For the first time since meeting Camila, Shawn was publicly linked to another woman in the press in the fall of 2017. Hailey Baldwin and Shawn were spotted at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights in October, but rumors really started flying at Kendall Jenner's Halloween party, where People's sources saw them leaving the party at one in the morning holding hands. Shawn and Hailey stayed linked through the MET Gala in 2018, which they attended together despite denying relationship rumors until Hailey broke things off to become the future Mrs. Justin Bieber in June of that year.
Camila's song "Real Friends" from her debut album, Camila, is a real downer when you're away from your ride or dies. Camila made sure the world knew Shawn was one of her A1 Day One real friends in an April 2018 Instagram post entirely dedicated to polaroids of the pair backstage. This was conveniently close to when publications speculated Hailey and Shawn might *actually* not be a couple. It was also the same month that Shawn and Camila had an adorable Twitter exchange where he sang her praises in a Beats1 interview, and Camila responded by saying she was crying in the club because she loves him "SO much." Girl, same.
These crazy kids have horrible timing! Apparently, Camila and so-called relationship expert Matthew Hussey started dating in February 2018 after meeting on the set of The Today Show, just a month before Shawn's sorta-romance with Hailey Baldwin ended. Camila and Matthew didn't officially make their relationship public until November 2018, when Camila gushed about the Brit in Marie Claire's holiday issue, but fans been knew about the budding romance from paparazzi pictures of the pair on vacation and vague comments Camila made in interviews. Their first red carpet appearance together wasn't until a few months later in February 2019, which we think is what's considered "taking it slow" in Hollywood.
In early December 2018, Camila tweeted out this photo of Shawn braiding her hair backstage with a simple heart as the caption. A few days earlier, she shared a photo of the two of them having an acoustic jam session on the floor, labeling it "Canadian fury + Latin sass," which Twitter commenters pointed out were also emblazoned on jerseys at a Christmas party years prior. Fans were seriously ready for Shawmila's second collab, but that wouldn't come for another six months.
Camila taking the next step in her relationship with Matthew didn't stop her from gushing about Shawn on social media. The "Real Friends" singer shared photos of herself hugging Shawn backstage at the Grammys on Instagram and praising how far they'd both come. Camila opened the show with a rollicking performance of "Havana," while Shawn teamed up with Miley Cyrus for a mid-show performance of "In My Blood." Camila's caption marveled at how it seemed like just yesterday they were kids singing Ed Sheeran songs in their dressing room, and she let the world know that she loves Shawn forever.
Shawn and Camila were really out here trying to deny their relationship while dropping the steamy video for their newest collab, "Señorita," but the internet wasn't having it. In the romantic, Latin-tinged jaunt, Shawn plays a drifter who picks up Camila while she's waitressing to take her to a motel room where they basically just make-out for three minutes (although, their lips never *actually* seem to touch). Someone else who wasn't having it? Camila's then-boyfriend, who one Twitter user noticed was blocking comments about the song and his supposed-GF.
Just a few days after "Señorita" dropped, People confirmed that Matthew and Camila had split. The couple had been together for over a year by the time they broke it off, and fans thought the timing of Matthew and Camila's split so close to Shawmila's sexy second collab was more than a little suspect. There's been no comment from either side about what caused their seemingly-strong relationship to fracture aside from an IG Story in which Camila pleaded with fans to leave Matthew alone, and even though it's none of our business, we're fascinated by a relationship coach having such a public breakup. Anyway, stream "Señorita."
A couple days after Camila and Matthew split, Shawmila decided to fuel relationship rumors by spending one of the sexiest holidays together, the Fourth of July. Us Weekly says Shawn and Camila were seen holding hands in West Hollywood before attending the 6th annual Red White and Bootsy party at Nobu. The pair looked "very intimate" and left holding hands. Sure, Shawmila had held hands before (read also: The People’s Choice Awards), but now that they're both single and promoting a hot new song, fans were convinced the pair were finally dating. There were also leaked vids of the two dancing together at the party.

Amid dating rumors, Camila went to support Shawn at this concert in Los Angeles on July 5th and posted what Cosmopolitan described a "flirty Insta Stories." One read, "@ShawnMendes, you couldn’t be more amazing. Wow ❤️," and the next said that her probable boyfriend was "unreal." Camila also called Shawn amazing in his IG comments a week prior on a post of the heartthrob singing their song, and Shawmila had been releasing behind-the-scenes videos from "Señoirita" including flirty little moments like the pair trying to decide who should take Shawn's shirt off and Shawn rehearsing throwing Camila onto the bed. You know, just friend stuff.
How, after all of this evidence, can Shawmila *still* be denying their love? During a July 6th Q&A captured by @PopCrave on Twitter, Shawn was asked if he was dating Camila, and the "In My Blood" singer shook his head no. It wasn't a super convincing denial, but it was a denial nonetheless. Even a full month later at the end of July, Shawn was still dodging questions about Camila, leaving during a Q&A where someone asked how "Señorita" was inspired. Shawn's now-deleted apology claimed he left to be "funny," but it just seemed like another denial to us.
While Shawmila were supposedly "not dating," a video surfaced of the pair KISSING in PUBLIC. Honestly, it was so public that some commenters were convinced their new relationship is a publicity stunt for "Señorita," but that single was doing just fine before these two became a couple. The two were also just randomly hugging on the street, where Cosmopolitan saw Camila fully stroking Shawn's abs (bruh, same), seeming to confirm reports of Shawmila dating (or, to the non-believers, confirm that these public relations are a little too public to be real).
In case you still thought these two were dating just for press, Shawmila don't need no press. @shawncamilaupd on Twitter found yet another photo of the pair kissing at a restaurant, this time in Tampa, making their romance officially bi-costal. Cosmopolitan also found tweets of the pair on a Florida coffee date while Shawn was in the area for a Miami show (that Camila and her whole family were caught attending on Instagram), but it's the pictures of Shawmila making out (with tongue!) in the ocean that really sealed the deal.
