Dove Cameron Opens Up About Split From Ex-Fiancé Ryan McCartan
Dove Cameron has opened up about her split from ex-fiancé Ryan McCartan in a new interview. The 23-year-old spoke about the split in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine where she said Ryan put pressure on her to make their relationship “look perfect all the time.” The couple, who first met while they co-starred on Disney show Liv and Maddie, got engaged in 2016 after three years of dating, before calling it quits just six months later.
Speaking to Seventeen about the split, Dove said: “It was my first ever real relationship, and it was on-screen and off-screen. A lot of what I went through in that first relationship, the very low-lows, I did not make public.”
“I was under the impression that I had to make everything look perfect all the time and my partner definitely put that in my ear,” she continued. “People thought I was sharing loads, but I hardly shared anything.”
It’s fair to say that Dove and 26-year-old Ryan presented a very loved-up and happy front on social media, so it came as a surprise to fans when they announced their split on Twitter just six months after their engagement. Ryan was the first to announce the breakup by posting a slightly salty tweet claiming it was all Dove’s idea.
“Dove has decided this relationship isn’t what she wants,” the actor tweeted in October of 2016. “We still love each other very much. Please be sensitive, as this is painful.” Dove tweeted her own response, writing: “Thank you for your support & full hearts in this very intense & human time. There’s a lot of love between Ryan & I. Life is beautiful & long.”

Dove has since moved on with her Descendants co-star Thomas Doherty and they seem happier than ever. In her interview with Seventeen, the Disney star called Thomas her “rock,” saying: “Every thought or feeling I have, no matter how strange or dark or heavy, he is a safe space for me, a never-ending well of patience and generosity. He is my world.”
