Celebrities are known for their crazy antics. They're also known for their lavish lifestyles and posh tastes. When you combine those two things, you get some wild celebrity purchases! Members of the Hollywood elite have purchased everything from mundane boats (well, mundane for them) to enough glitter to fill a stadium. When you have the money to burn, why not buy some jaw-droppingly expensive things?!
We want to believe celebs are just like us, but they totally aren't! They flaunt their wealth and aren't living paycheck to paycheck like most of America. Financial comfort can lead to interesting results. Several celebrities have invested their wealth or donated tons of it. But then, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have celebs who basically throw their money in a shredder. You won't believe some of these celebrity purchases!
In 2016, after moving into her own place, Jenner decided she needed to decorate her new mega-mansion. You'd expect chic and modern furniture, but Jenner had something else in mind. She spent $52,000 on a sofa from the avant-garde Italian brand Edra. The "Boa" coach is a giant nest of soft tubes (think: the biggest crocheted scarf you've ever seen). Jenner bought the couch after realizing she had come in under her furniture budget while furnishing her new house. For most people, that would mean extra pocket change for other things. For Kendall, it meant splurging on one of the most expensive couches of all time!
Buying grills (i.e. gilded dentures) is nothing new in Hollywood. The exorbitance of this purchase, though, comes from the fact that Bieber paid this amount for a Halloween costume. Meaning he wore it once. He recruited Ben Baller from the jewelry company If & Co. to get the blingy piece made. Oh, and this was back in 2013 when Bieber was basically a child! There's a reason child stars tend to squander their money — they're buying things like this!
When Cyrus was 17, she was rocking extensions constantly. So fans rejoiced when she finally kicked them to the curb and sported a more natural look. Little did they know the extension hiatus was in preparation for the pinnacle of hair extensions. Cyrus ended up spending $24,000 on faux locks flown in from Italy. They were the highest quality of hair she could buy and dyed expertly to match her own hair exactly. This is one of the most insane cosmetic celebrity purchases of all time!
Rowland splurged for an opulent tub — but it wasn't even for herself! It was for her friend Beyoncé's baby, Blue. The tub, by Baby Diamond Bathtub (a real business), retails for over $5,000 and is encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Celebrity purchases sometimes get out of control when it comes to gifts! It's a steep price for a little tub the baby will undoubtedly grow out of! We like to think Blue plays with her dolls in it now like the R&B royalty she truly is.
La Petite Maison
Supermodel Rachel Hunter wanted her dogs to live in the same luxury as she does so she made them an ultra chic dog house. For most people that would entail a trip to Home Depot and a Saturday spent building; for her, it meant contacting the company La Petit Maison and having them build a doggie mansion. The company specializes in making miniature versions of celebs houses for their dogs and charge up to $50,000 per dog house! The model clearly spared no expense and even decorated the windowsills with plants. Hunter's German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever were living in luxury with their mommy's crazy purchase!
How much would you pay for a good night's sleep? The Harry Potter star once shelled out almost $20K for something he would be unconscious when using. As far as celebrity purchases go, this one is completely unnecessary, but we also kinda get it. If we were rich, we'd shell out any amount of money to rest easier. Radcliffe isn't known for his exorbitant purchases and has basically stayed out of the tabloids so we're a little shocked he ended up on this list. We're guessing that was a super soft mattress!
In 2018, Depp did a wild interview with Rolling Stone that revealed more than a few shocking things about the star, one of which was the fact that he spends more than $30,000 a month on wine! He actually admitted he was upset that it was reported he spent that much on wine because it was definitely much more than $30,000. Depp is reportedly deep in debt (say that five times fast) and struggling financially, yet he still finds nothing wrong with his insane spending on booze? We're just over here wondering when he's ever sober if he's buying that much wine a month!
This may not seem like an extreme celebrity purchase, but when you think about what the item is, it's a little crazy! We totally believe in the power of sex toys (#loveyourself) but do you really need a golden vibrator? It's not like you can even see it when you're using it! Moss bought the Jimmy Jane brand toy at a pop-up shop for La Petite Coquette in NYC and, as the shop owner put it, why wouldn't you want to most precious minerals inside you?! There are more shocking celebrity purchases but this one definitely made our jaws drop!
In 2014, Jay-Z got into the equestrian business in a big way. He purchased the racehorse California Chrome, a Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. It's definitely a totally different venture for the rapper who has dipped into sports but never on this level. Horses are a huge investment but we're pretty sure this prize-winning steed paid off for Jay-Z. Celebrity purchases start to get real frivolous when you're such a big star that you have money to burn on random hobbies.
The pop songstress said in an interview that she was spending thousands of dollars a month on glitter. For context, a small vial of glitter is like $1 most places. To be fair, she was using most of it in her live show where she had glitter everywhere from on her body to being shot out of cannons. Still, spending more on glitter a month than most people spend on rent is a little much. She reported this in 2011 and we're pretty sure she still has remnants of that glitter floating around today. Glitter is the STD of the arts and crafts world after all!
For the 2007 BET awards, Bey wanted to look amazing. So she spent $100,000 on straight-off-the-runway Balenciaga leggings. But they weren't just any leggings — they were golden leggings. Meanwhile, we're over here rocking the same Forever 21 black leggings until they get a hole in the crotch. It's wild that Bey spent the equivalent of a small house on leggings that she wore approximately one time!
Holly Madison, known for her Playboy centerfolds and for being one of Hugh Hefner's former girlfriends, makes a lot of money on her boobs. So, it makes sense that she would want to get insurance on her greatest asset. The buxom star noted that her boobs are her money maker and if anything were to happen to do them she wouldn't be able to make a living. Thus, $1 million to ensure she's always covered no matter what may happen to her body. We've heard of people insuring their body parts before, but never on this scale!
We don't know how much this celebrity purchase was, but we're betting it's jaw-dropping considering what was purchased. Diamonds themselves are expensive, now imagine buying an entire mine full of them. Akon threw himself in the diamond biz when he invested in a mine in South Africa. We're sure he's raking in the dough from his purchase, despite his somewhat problematic views about diamonds. ICYMI: he doesn't think "blood diamonds" are even a thing. It does make us wonder how ethical his diamond mining practices are all things considered!
Back in 2011 when the iPhone 4 was the hottest thing on the market, Posh Spice had the poshest one of all (duh): one plated in gold. Custom made by the designer Stuart Hughes, the phone had a whopping 150 grams of 24k gold. This insane purchase brings about a few dilemmas. We'd be terrified to scratch it, but we also wouldn't want to throw a case on it and cover up all the golden splendor. Also, it has to be so heavy! Beckham has since ditched the phone (we are on the iPhone 8 now!), but we're sure she still has her gilded celly floating around somewhere.
This is one of the most jaw-dropping celebrity purchases on this list solely for how frivolous it is! When Bono was in Italy in 2003, set to perform there, he realized he left his signature hat back London. While most people would just wait until they got back to grab the black trilby, or maybe even express ship it over, Bono did one better: he flew the hat to him. On a first class seat, no less! Bono spent almost $2,000 solely so he could have his hat in time for his concert. This is definitely one of the stupidest celebrity purchases ever!
When you're rich and famous you've got to go to the bathroom in style! For Kim and Kanye, this clearly meant gold toilets. When the couple bought their Bel Air mansion, they wanted nothing but the best throughout the house. Word has it they even decided that they needed to spend double the house cost on the interior decorating! They spent almost $1 million on things they were going to go to the bathroom in. We can only imagine what the rest of the house looks like if that's what they splurge on for toilets!
Rihanna is always looking great and now we know why. She spends seven figures yearly to make sure her hair looks perfect every damn day. She pays her stylist Ursula Stephen a yearly salary of over $1 million to keep her locks perfect. This is paid out through the daily retainer fee of $3,200 that Rihanna gives Ursula every single day. When you're a global superstar, you have to always look on point and hair is half the battle.
2010 was a wild time. Katy Perry and Russell Brand were set to be married and Richard Bronson was planning a space excursion. Who knew those two things would converge?! For her man's birthday, Perry bought him a $200,000 ticket to ride the Virgin Galactic spaceship for its maiden voyage. The ship was going to shoot up from Earth into space, allow some time for free-floating in zero gravity, and then come right back down. The trip still hasn't been made so who knows if Brand will ever make it to space. I'm sure Katy hopes not considering their divorce was not amicable!
In 2002, Dion began a Las Vegas residency and if she had to be performing in the same room every night, she needed some special accommodations. So she bought a $2 million humidifier to preserve her singing voice and combat the dry desert weather. The humidifier hung from the ceiling above her as she sang. We're pretty sure a $30 humidified from Target would have gotten the job done, too, but we digress. This is one of the most absurd celebrity purchases we've heard of!
Spielberg was willing to pay a high price for a piece of cinematic history. Spielberg spent $60,500 on one of three "Rosebud" sleds that were used in the classic film. He purchased the sled in 1982 and has owned it for over three decades now! Citizen Kane has long been regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time so it makes sense that a film God like Spielberg would love it. It seems a little pricey to spend five figures on a movie prop that is one of many but hey, it's not our money!
Walt Disney Pictures
Depp strikes again on this list! Before he was knee-deep in debt and scandal, he was flush with cash and buying private islands. In 2004, he reportedly paid $3.6 for Little Halls Pond Cay in the Bahamas. The island is 45 acres of pure privacy for Depp. Depp has never been one to preserve his cash (note all the money he spends on wine) and his purchasing of an island is no different. He owns over a dozen houses, including one on the island, and we can't help but wonder who needs that much space and why it wouldn't be better going to people in need! Considering Depp's recent money problems, who knows how much longer he'll own this crazy purchase!
When Vick was just starting the NFL and making tons of money, he spent some of it a little too carefree. He spent a whopping $85,000 for a fish pond at his house. Celebrity purchases get out of control when the celeb is just starting the rise to fame! Often they don't take taxes and such into account. Unfortunately for him, he was also spending tons of money on dogfighting and, after getting caught, he had to spend time in prison. He lost his NFL career, his money, and presumably his fish pond. Bet he could use that $85,000 now! Vick has since gotten his life semi-back on track but he's nowhere near making the money he once did as a young player in the NFL.
Back when these two were married and living under the same roof, they were providing everything imaginable to their kids. This includes an entire candy room in their mansion. While they didn't disclose how much they paid for the room we can only assume it was crazy expensive. Not only did they have to fill it with confections, but they maintained the inventory (like a candy store!) all for their presumably super-hyper kids. This is one of the silliest celebrity purchases because it can only have bad outcomes. Cavities, sticky surfaces, and expired candy just to name a few!
Paying that much for any kind of clothing item is insane in and of itself. But when you factor in Foxx's statements that he has never even worn the jacket, it gets next level crazy! Foxx said in an interview that some pretty girls talked him into buying the extravagant coat but that he totally regrets the purchase. I mean, where would you even wear something like that?! He also mentioned that the jacket barely fits correctly, meaning even if he decided to wear it someday, it probably wouldn't look very flattering. We're guessing luxury brands that charge almost $20,000 for coats don't accept returns so lightly!

Lucas, the man who brought Star Wars to the big screen is, of course, flush with funds. His Skywalker Ranch, the compound on which he lives, is pricey on its own. But the cherry on top is that he employs a fleet of fire trucks and a number of firefighters to protect his property. He hasn't disclosed how much this costs but he's literally operating an entire fire department out of his home so we're guessing it's not cheap! This crazy purchase does have its benefits though. In 2018, as fires broke out across California, the Skywalker Ranch firefighters were called upon to help out in the area and protect homes! Some seemingly random celebrity purchases can turn out to be super helpful.
Celebrity purchases seem to get every crazier when they're gifts! Cox bought a $12,000 Chanel bike for her pal Jennifer Aniston after hearing her mention she'd like to start biking. The bike was outfitted with a leather seat, the classic Chanel logo, and jeweled pant clips to keep your pants from getting caught in the bike chain. I mean, a Huffy is like $120, but sure, go with the Chanel version! Considering all the outdoor conditions bikes experience, we wouldn't want to take this one out of the garage!
Bieber pops up again with another insane purchase. When the star was a mere 17 years old, he was already forming one of the premier car collections in Hollywood. One of the cars in his fleet is a customized Cadillac CTS-V that was transformed to look like the Batmobile. With some help from West Coast Customs (remember them from Pimp My Ride?!), Bieber transformed the car with Batman logos and a matte black finish. We'd expect nothing less from a famous teen than spending six figures pimping out a car!
This may be one of the smartest celebrity purchases on this list! Johnson went in on 30 Burger King locations in 2004 to add to his growing repertoire of restaurants. He had previously purchased T.G.I.Friday's and a few franchises of Starbucks. But this coup of 30 Burger Kings was his biggest acquisition yet. While we don't know how much he spent on them, we can bet it was a pretty penny. All things considered, though, the fast-food chain has been steady for years meaning Johnson is probably pulling in some good money from his investment!
In 2011, Trump purchased the Boeing 757 from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $100 million. The jet is outfitted with all the amenities of a house and most things are plated in 24k gold! Whatever you may think about Trump, there is no denying that this is an extravagant celebrity purchase. He used the jet during his Presidential run in 2016 and the crazy thing is now that he's been elected, he uses Air Force One for transportation. Meaning his $100 million jet was used for five years and now sits in some hangar somewhere!
Ace of Spades
This is not the first, nor the last time we'll see Jay-Z pop up on this list. He's truly the king of jaw-dropping celebrity purchases! During the release cycle for Watch the Throne, Jay-Z was partying hard and celebrating his collaborative album with Kanye West big time. One night in Miami, he was buying bottle after bottle of champagne racking up a bill of $250,000. Reportedly, he was trying to upstage Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who had spent $100,000 on champagne one night after the Mavs won the NBA championship. The champagne he was buying was Ace of Spades, a brand that charges $100,000 for a 15-liter bottle alone!
Just when you thought Rachel Hunter's expensive dog house was nuts, Paris Hilton comes through with an even more expensive one! As far as foolish celebrity purchases go, big dog houses are high up on the list. My dogs are in heaven with a blanket on the floor; they wouldn't know what to do with a giant house! That doesn't deter Hilton, though, who paid six figures for a miniature version of her own mansion for her dog. The home is nicer than most houses for people! It's complete with air conditioning and heat, designer furniture, and a chandelier. Because what dog doesn't enjoy some great interior decorating?
When Tyson was at the height of his boxing career (you know, prior to his rape conviction), he was seemingly giving money away... to corporations for extravagant goods. One of his wildest purchases was a 24k gold bathtub for his now ex-wife Robin Givens. He reportedly paid over $2 million for the solid gold tub. Considering it's something that people are merely going to wash their dirt into, it definitely seems like one of the more cuckoo celebrity purchases! Tyson and Givens have since split. We wonder who got the bathtub in the divorce!
Warner Bros. Pictures
This is by far one of the most eccentric celebrity purchases we've heard in a while! Gaga is serious about keeping evil spirits out of her home. In 2010, she shelled out money on ghost hunters as well as an electromagnetic field meter which could, reportedly, detect spirits. Considering the uncertainty in the "ghost hunting" world, we're shocked she'd spend so much on fancy equipment. Although, this was when the star was one of the biggest up-and-coming singers in the world. Suddenly coming into lots of money can make you buy silly things!
Paying this much for a car is no biggie for a celeb. It barely registers as a purchase to them! But we definitely find it jaw-dropping when a celeb pays this much for a car they don't intend to keep in great condition! Cyrus shelled out $125,000 for a Range Rover meant solely to transport her dogs. The reasoning is that she has plenty of gorgeous cars that are off-limits to the dogs. The Range Rover, though, is one they can drive around in and destroy with abandon. That's still a crazy amount of money to pay for a car that your dogs are going to scratch up and leave hair all over!
Another crazy celeb purchase meant as a gift! When Jolie and her then-beau Brad Pitt were engaged (simpler times), she cornered the market on extravagant birthday gifts. She gifted Pitt a helicopter and private flying lessons for over $1 million in 2012. She even had a helicopter pad installed on the grounds of their home in France! We're guessing for that price the helicopter was big enough to fly around the entire Brangelina brood!
In the early '00s, Nicolas Cage got into a bidding war with Leonardo DiCaprio for arguably one of the coolest celebrity purchases of all time: the skull of a Tyrannosaurus Bataar. The dino skull was sold at auction for $276,000 and Cage hung onto the collectible for many years until something peculiar happened in 2015. It was reported that the skull was actually a stolen artifact that wasn't meant to be sold. Despite spending all that money on it, Cage did agree to turn the skull over so it could be returned to Mongolia.
We told you he'd be back again on the list! This is one of the most ridiculous celebrity car purchases ever. We can only imagine how much it costs to insure an $8 million car! Jay-Z dropped a sizable amount of money to get his hands on the luxury sports car that literally only someone like him could ever afford. This Maybach is one of the most luxurious cars ever made and Jay-Z isn't the only rapper to get his hands on one. Birdman also reportedly invested in an Exelero!
In 1989, Kim Basinger, a Georgia native, decided she wanted to own a piece of her home state. The actress, along with a few other investors, spent $20 million on 1,751 acres of Braselton, Georgia's 2,000-acre span. The intention was to turn it into a tourist destination, but that didn't fully come to fruition. It was only five years later that she and her investors sold the property, at a loss, so that she wouldn't have to declare bankruptcy. Some celebrity purchases seem like a good idea at the time, but who knows what could happen down the road!
In the '80s and '90s, Tyson was burning through money at a shocking rate. One of his biggest purchases was three Bengal tigers for a cool $140,000. While most people just buy a cat to satiate their feline needs, Tyson decided he needed three predatory animals instead. But the cost of the animals went far beyond him just buying them. He also had to house and feed them! The food for the tigers alone was almost $200,000 a year. Meaning he paid more feeding them in a single year than he paid for the cats to begin with! He eventually had to surrender the giant cats, but not before they made their film debut in The Hangover. Hopefully, they got paid for the deal because Tyson definitely needs to recoup some money after this crazy purchase!
The Beatles had a tough go of it when it came to getting full ownership of their songs. By 1969, they had lost the rights to everything written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney to ATV Music. But by 1985, ATV Music was up for sale and Jackson was there to put in a bid. The messed up part? It was McCartney who had told his one-time collaborator how much that company was worth! He was unhappy, to say the least when he lost out on getting the rights back to the songs he had written. When Jackson died, his shares of ATV Music were transferred over to Sony, who now owns The Beatles catalog. Whether or not McCartney will ever be able to regain what he helped create remains to be seen, but we're sure he would pay a pretty penny for it!
