No one really knows what went down with Mac Miller and YouTube star Tana Mongeau. The controversial 21-year-old internet sensation had voiced her love of Mac’s music for years, and when he died unexpectedly on September 7, 2018, Tana claimed that the two had been in a relationship in the weeks leading up to his fatal overdose.

The Tana Turns 21 reality star posted an iMessage she said was from Mac Miller alongside a caption that read:

“a week ago.. Malcolm James I loved you… i got the privilege of loving you for years and then getting to know you and finding out you were even better than i dreamed. you made me feel something, you were sweet to me every second.. you had this love for life and what you do that made me fall for you 10x harder… to feel like i was unraveling every part of your soul but have no idea the half of what you were going through. i wanted to come over last night… my soul is shattered… what i would do for you to tuck my hair behind my ear and kiss me one last time.. i love you Malcolm. i love you. [sic]”

She later changed the caption to “i love you Malcolm. i love you”

She later explained her relationship on-air with No Jumper and posted a Coachella tribute to him moments before his two-year girlfriend Ariana Grande took the stage. It’s messy because Mac Miller never shared his alleged relationship with Tana publicly, so her control of the narrative of their relationship feels opportunistic and possibly one-sided to many. She’s now married to Jake Paul after the two dated for a couple of months. She’s said they’re not positive whether the marriage was legally legit or not.

On the one-year anniversary of Mac’s death, Tana took to Instagram again to shed some more light on her side of the bond they shared. On her Instagram Story, she wrote, “my favorite thing to do with Malcolm was sit with him over that grande white piano while he played.. somehow tonight i RANDOMLY ended up on a rooftop listening to someone sing and play over a big white piano… i felt like it was exactly where he’d want me to be tonight. made my heart full.”

She also posted an image of the late rapper sitting at his white piano with a long caption, “i’ll always hate that we’ll just dedicate this day to missing you publicly and then it’ll just feel like the whole world keeps… moving. there isn’t a second, minute, hour, or day that goes by that i wouldn’t give everything i have just to see you or hear your voice for another minute. [sic]”

She continued, “a year ago was the worst day of my life. i’ll spend every day trying to put back the pieces of my heart but i don’t think they’ll ever fit right again. a year and a day ago- i had you here, laughing, smiling, cracking a joke and lighting a cigarette.. it kills me. i know you’d be mad to see me sad today or any day but honestly to have you here and even mad at me again would feel like i had the world in my hands. i’m just grateful you taught me how to be happy on the worst days.. it’s just not the same with you gone. thank you for everything you taught me on this earth and everything your words will continue to teach me. i miss you.. i love you.. forever. [sic]”

She finished the post saying she’d dedicate the rest of her life to his legacy.

While the sentiments shared are thoughtful and beautiful, some Mac Miller fans are pissed that she’s seemingly exploited his death as an opportunity to gain sympathy and followers in a way that Mac would never approve of. Some have said the posts seem “fishy,” while others have straight-up accused Tana of using Mac for clout.

But not everyone is confused that Tana’s reveal of her relationship is just for attention.

The worst part is that we’ll probably never know.
