Less than two years after K-Pop star Kim Jong-hyun killed himself, f(x) idol Sulli has died unexpectedly after a long battle with depression, CNN reports.

“So far, it seems she killed herself, but we will leave all possibilities open and investigate,” a police official told the news network. There was apparently a note left at her home where her manager found her body.

Fans are grieving the loss of Sulli, whose real name is Choi Jin-ri, who was a staunch advocate against cyberbullying.

Sulli’s apparent suicide so soon after Jonghyun’s has sparked a conversation about the pressure that K-Pop bands are being put under by their management. BTS has quickly become one of the largest groups in the world, but it’s no secret that K-Pop management groups typically submit the “idols” to rigorous working and training schedules with little downtime even before they make it big. There have also been reports about the psychological toll it takes, not only from the exhaustion but from management’s pressure to conform to the ideal of Korean pop beauty.

Apink‘s Chorong said on a TV show in 2017 that while the group trained, they were forced to keep a strict diet. “We had to scale our weight once a week, and that’s how I became obsessed with food,” she said, according to The Korea Herald.

Though something this tragic should never have to “serve a purpose,” hopefully Sulli’s untimely death and life cut-off too soon can be a reality check for K-Pop stars that certain sacrifices need to be made to maintain your mental health, and that’s okay.
