Zayn Malik Spills Tea On “Broken” One Direction Relationships
Looks like Zayn Malik, 25, didn’t develop “Stockholm Syndrome” during his time in One Direction. We’d figured out there was some love lost between the “Pillowtalk” singer and his former bandmates after he left the band in March 2015, but we didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until a piece of his interview with British Vogue was published on November 6, where he described his “broken” One Direction relationships.
“I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time, to be honest with you. That’s just the way it is,” Zayn said. “There’s things that happen and things that were said after I left… Snide things. Small things that I would never have expected.”
Zayn explained that 1D’s overnight success took a toll on his relationships in the band, and he left it without making any friends.
“We went from theatres, to arenas, to stadiums – there was never any sort of bridge between. Just boom, boom, boom,” he said about his road to super-stardom when he was just seventeen. “People take it different ways – especially when there are five different personalities. The relationships had broken apart.”
The self-described “island” seems to have been the most affected, as Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have remained close after the band announced a hiatus.
Zayn and Harry reportedly had as little to do with each other as they could while they were in the band, but his relationships with his other bandmates were solid as of last year, when Louis confirmed to SiriusXM that he and Zayn had worked through their issues and were “mates again,” as per one of Louis’s mother’s dying wishes.
“My mum said, ‘You’ve got to get back in contact with Zayn. Life’s too f*cking short,” Louis told The Sun after his mother passed away in December 2016. “A mother’s intuition is crazy. It always felt supernatural to me. My mum always knew what I was feeling and what I wanted.”
Unfortunately, the tides have turned, and Zayn is back to playing the victim when talking about a band he once called “generic as f*ck.”
“I think I always wanted to go, from like the first year, really,” Zayn told Beats 1 in 2016. “I never really wanted to be there, like in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time, and when I realized the direction we were going in – mind the pun – with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me because I realized I couldn’t put any input in.”
Luckily for Zayn, his relationship with supermodel Gigi Hadid remains solid after the couple reconciled following their split earlier this year. He may not have any friends, but at least his girlfriend is hot.
