In incredible (rumored) casting news of the day, it looks like Camila Cabello is a serious contender to play the role of Maria in Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming remake of West Side Story! Ever since the film was first announced, rumors have been flying about who could play the lead roles of Tony and Maria in the updated version of the musical. But, one name just keeps coming up: Camila’s.

Back in January, Cindy Tolan, the film’s casting director, announced the search on Twitter. The casting call referred to the four main characters: Tony, Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. Maria must be latina and requires an actress between 15 and 25 years old with singing abilities and background in dance. Sounds exactly like Camila, doesn’t it?

Details about the film’s casting and production are scarce at this point, but rumors that Camila will play Maria have been circulating since February! To add to the speculation, in April, the “Havana” singer posted a caption-less tweet of a picture of Claire Danes in the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet. We ALL know that West Side Story is a modernization of William Shakespeare‘s story. It’s about two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, and the tragic love story of a man and woman caught in between. So, why would Camila randomly post that photo if there wasn’t some truth to the rumors?

Now, New York radio host, Mike Adam re-fueled speculation after tweeting that an announcement is coming. “Looks like an official announcement may happen soon! “#CamilaCabello has reportedly been cast as the lead in Spielberg’s #WestSideStory!!!,” he wrote on Twitter.

TBH, we think Camila would be absolutely perfect for the role. She can dance, she can sing, and she also knows a thing or two about the film. She recently made an appearance in the Lin-Manuel Miranda song “Almost Like Praying” – based on the song “Maria” from West Side Story – to raise money for Puerto Rico after a devastating hurricane tore through the U.S. Territory last year.

We’re still waiting for an official confirmation, but we have all our fingers crossed on this one. If she does get cast in the project, the West Side Story remake will mark Camila’s first major acting job. Since leaving Fifth Harmony in 2016, she’s focused on her solo music and has proven that she’s a force to be reckoned with. Therefore, acting could definitely be her next feat!
