Debby Ryan Opens Up About How Dylan & Cole Sprouse Helped Her With “Chaos” of Disney Channel
The world has been keeping a close eye on Disney Channel stars for the past few weeks, ever since singer/actress Demi Lovato experienced a drug overdose last month and checked herself into rehab earlier this week. And now, former Suite Life on Deck star Debby Ryan is getting super real about what it was like to grow up on the Disney Channel and how costars Dylan and Cole Sprouse helped guide her through it.
While promoting her controversial new Netflix series, Insatiable, the actress told People that Dyl and Cole helped her navigating the confusing waters of childhood stardom. “When I kind of stepped into this world they had only known this and I feel like I got a lot of advice and we connected a lot in that sense,” she said of the celebrity twins.
And although she never mentioned Demi by name during this interview, we can’t help but think about how her discussion about body image issues and “recreat[ing] chaos in your life” could be referring to her friend, the “Tell Me You Love Me” singer. Debby explained that something as small as having a pool party was not easy for her, even pre-Disney days. “Putting on a bathing suit and then not swimming and wrapping yourself up in a towel while everyone else swims at 12 or 13 years old, that’s just personal. Then having that body change and be on magazines alongside comparisons, which is so toxic, it can really create a perfect storm of chaos,” she said.
She continued, “It forces you to really examine where you find your value and what you think of as pretty or interesting. And if you’re bred in a world of chaos, I think the only way to sometimes feel comfortable is to recreate that chaos in your life, which is where a lot of us misstep.”
Debby also said that the feelings she – and other people in similar situations – has aren’t always taken seriously. “It’s hard to communicate,” she explained. “I don’t want to hear people whine about ‘Oh, it sucks, you’re famous.'” She went on to say that because of that, she’s incredibly grateful that she maintains friendships with many other Disney Channel alums. Even though some of them are on “different parallel versions of similar journeys,” they can fully understand what she went through/what she’s going through.
She’s closest to Cole and Dylan, who have been there for her ever since she first entered the Disney world, but she recently had a mini-Disney Channel reunion with Demi, Alyson Stoner, and Matthew Scott Montgomery in April. “It’s a nice thing to be able to see someone and be like, you get it,” she said.
Earlier this year, Debby opened up about her friendship with Cole and what it means to her. “It’s really nice I think when you go through such intense, insane life during your high school years with people,” she told Entertainment Tonight in July. “There are only a few people that knew you before that and outside of that and through that and I value my friendship with both him and Dylan.”
We’re so glad they have each other to lean on. Considering the crazy lives they live, you need those solid friendships to keep it together when $h*! totally hits the fan.
