Penn Badgley Says He’s Been “Molested” By Gossip Girl Fans
Many celebrities have admitted that fame is not all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, a lot of them have even openly said they hate it. Now, Penn Badgley is the latest celeb to say that there is definitely a dark side to being famous – and it was especially apparent during his days on Gossip Girl. The actor is promoting his new show You (about a man who becomes obsessed with a woman) and admitted that fans were so obsessed with his character Dan Humphrey that they even went as far as to assault him.
Penn revealed that he’s been the object of “pretty full-on obsession,” which he believes can come with the territory of being an actor starring in a popular TV series. This is true about a ton of shows, including GG, The Vampire Diaries, and even Riverdale. Fans became so passionate about the characters they see on their TV screens that they forget they’re not real but that the actors playing them are.
“I think as an actor you can become an object of desire, which is something women are already accustomed to more or less around the world,” he said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I mean, I don’t want to sound sensationalist, but I’ve literally been molested — just in the literal sense of the word — by many people in the moment. Because that’s what they do.”
The website reported that Penn was “thoughtful” while discussing this topic and was careful not to compare his experiences to some of the women who have come forward in the wake of the #MeToo movement. However, he admitted that Terry Crews, the Brooklyn 99 star who recently revealed that he, too, has been sexually assaulted, inspired him to share his story.
Penn was “quick to acknowledge the privilege that being a man, not to mention a white man, affords him” because as a man, unwanted advances aren’t necessarily seen as “unwanted.” He further explained, “You’re led as a man, particularly, that when it happens you should feel great about it. Particularly when it comes from someone who’s feasibly an object of your desire as well.”
He added that he’s happy that You is coming out now, at this pivotal time. “I think it’s significant that a show like this is coming out now because if it had come out any other time, we might not have have been having these necessary conversations around it,” he said. “And we might have been all too ready to consume something that I think actually has some really dangerous seeds in it.”
The movie is about a bookstore clerk named Joe Goldberg, who falls madly in love with a customer named Guinevere Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail). However, we soon realize that Joe isn’t “in love,” and that he’s full-on obsessed with her, which leads to stalking and violence.
