Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart Says Demi Lovato’s Mental Health Honesty Changed Her Life
Lili Reinhart has become a champion of body positivity and mental health awareness in a time when the entertainment industry needs it the most. The Riverdale star’s honest approach to mental health and depression is refreshing AF to see and it has not gone unnoticed. In a new interview with Variety, the actress opened up about how influential Demi Lovato has been in her life when it comes to being open about her mental health struggles and the impact she had on her growing up.
“I definitely looked up to Demi Lovato. I remember her as being the first person [I heard] talk about depression and growing up with an eating disorder,” Lili said, adding it was still comforting to know that she wasn’t alone. “I personally have not had an eating disorder, but her openness and honesty about her mental health was really cool to me. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how I feel!’ She’s famous and beautiful and has money, and it’s strange to think that she could still feel that way too.”
Demi’s candidness has helped and inspired so many people over the years – and Lili’s comments show us how important this kind of positive influence is and how quickly it can spread.
Lili further explained the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer’s role in her life, saying, “It was just an awareness that [depression] can affect anyone of any gender, any race, any age, no matter how much money you make or how famous you are. It’s just something you were born with, and you can get past it. It doesn’t have to define you, or make you [feel] any less of a person.”
It also goes to show how influential it can be for celebs to go public with their personal experiences. Just like Lili learned from Demi that depression and mental health don’t discriminate, fans who follow Lili on social media have probably learned the same lesson. The actress has amassed millions of social media followers who appreciate her honesty and relatability. She often posts tweets – like the one below – to show fans that even stars have bad days.

Lili admitted that she’s still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that she’s quickly become a beacon of honesty for people. She revealed that fans frequently approach her at conventions to share their own personal stories, telling her how she’s changed their lives.
“I’ve always been aware of depression, anxiety, and body dysmorphia because it’s something I’ve lived with for a while. But being exposed to this industry and so many more people from all around the world, I’m really seeing how closed off people are from talking about it, so it’s been a process of learning that what I’m doing is actually helping,” she said.
Whatever she’s doing is working because people adore Lili for sharing her mental health journey. Fans of both Lili and Demi are lucky to have amazing women to listen to and learn from.
