Selena Gomez Breaks Her Silence On Demi Lovato’s Overdose
While many celebrities – including Lili Reinhart and the Jonas brothers – sent Demi Lovato messages of support after her overdose in July, Selena Gomez was doing it away from the public eye. The “Back to You” singer spoke out for the first time about her longtime friend’s overdose, telling Elle magazine that she reached out to her personally when the incident happened.
Though she kept her comments brief, the publication noted that Selena was on the verge of tears and visibly “choking up” when she started to talk about Demi’s health. It turns out, the interview took place just six days after Demi’s overdose, which explains why Selena was so emotional.
“All I’m saying is, I reached out personally,” she revealed. “I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I… I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So… it’s… that’s what I’ll say.”
As previously reported, Demi was allegedly found unconscious inside her Hollywood Hills home after a night of heavy partying with friends. The “Tell Me You Love Me” singer reportedly overdosed on drugs (though it’s still unclear what she took) and was rushed to the hospital. After a two-week stay, she checked herself into rehab where she’s currently seeking treatment.
Selena may not have publicly commented on Demi’s overdose at the time, but her mom Mandy Teefey did post an emotional message on Instagram alongside a photo of the two BFFs.
As you may know, Selena and Demi have been friends since they were kids. The two starred in Barney & Friends together back in 2002 and both went on to become Disney Channel stars. Over the years, their relationship changed and fans began to notice that the two weren’t hanging out as much, but they later reunited at the InStyle Awards in October 2017, where they reportedly rekindled their friendship.
“They’re cool now,” a source told Us Weekly at the time. “Demi’s documentary [Simply Complicated] really inspired her to rebuild relationships in her life, and Selena was one of those relationships she wanted to make better. They’re friends again.”
“There wasn’t one main reason that even broke them apart — a lot of their beef was just them being young girls,” the source added, which many speculated had a lot to do with Selena close friendship with Taylor Swift. But, despite their ups and downs, they always supported one another.
We’re so glad that Demi has all the support she needs during this difficult time. We’re also happy that Demi and Selena are in each other’s lives. They’ve been through a lot and need each other now more than ever.
