Lili Reinhart Admits She & Camila Mendes Had To Fight For Equal Pay On Riverdale
Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes are basically feminist icons at this point, so we’re not necessarily suprised that they fought for equal pay on the Riverdale set. We’re just bummed out that they had to. During a recent interview for an Allure cover story, Lili admitted that when it comes to fair pay compared to her male co-stars on The CW show, she’s had to fight for what she’s owed. In 2018, all four lead actors on Riverdale were making $40,000 per episode, per Variety.
“Cami and I have had to deal with [negotiating pay] from Riverdale,” she told the mag. “Going into projects in the future, I’m much more aware of it. So is my lawyer […] Taraji [P.] Henson had said something like, when she renegotiated for Empire, she knew her value to the show. She knew what that value was, and she demanded it.”
She continued, “I do know the value that I bring as someone who attracts an audience. And I’m not going to accept less than what I think I’m worth. And it’s okay to fight for what I’m worth.”
It’s possible that KJ Apa, who plays Archie Andrews on the show, was offered more money to begin the series since he was *supposed* to be the lead character. But almost instantly Riverdale became more of an ensemble show, where Lili’s character, Betty Cooper, basically has the same amount of screen time as Archie — if not more. Also, Cole Sprouse‘s Disney Channel roots and established career may have had something to do with a higher paycheck. Oh, also sexism.
Lili was basically unknown before she snagged the gig on Riverdale except for a recurring part on Surviving Jack and a one-off episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Now that the 23-year-old actor is a CoverGirl ambassador, a star in one of 2019’s biggest films, Hustlers and the lead and exective producer of the upcoming movie Chemical Hearts for Amazon Studios. So she better be getting a bigger paycheck!
