Earlier this week we were blessed with the news that our fave ’90s sitcom Saved By The Bell is getting rebooted. The reboot will star original cast members, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley (aka Slater and Jessie) and will be on NBCUniversal’s new streaming service Peacock. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will explore what happens when Zack Morris gets into hot water as the new California governor for closing too many low-income high schools. Zack proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. Mario and Elizabeth will return to play their OG characters in new roles as parents.

One of the main takings from the plot is that Zack will return in a wild political role, but there’s just one issue there. The actor who played Zack, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, says he was never asked to take part in the reboot. Amidst the buzz surrounding the news, the actor told Variety that he didn’t even know it was happening.

“I read it in the trades just like everybody else this morning,” he told the publication. “Honestly, I was never approached. I woke up to the news this morning with a kind of ‘huh’ response.” Mark-Paul said that he’s “always been interested” in a reboot, but understands why NBC didn’t reach out. The actor currently stars on ABC’s show Mixed-ish, which is pretty much in direct competition with NBC. He told Variety: “I’m on ABC, so it doesn’t really fit into that considering Disney Plus, so I understand the business side of things. But I had no idea it was that far along.”

Despite NBC’s apparent snub of Mark-Paul, TMZ reports that the network does really want him to reprise the role of Zack, but his schedule with ABC will overlap the SBTB filming schedule. According to the tabloid, the plan is to try to get MPG to make as many guest appearances on Saved By The Bell as his Mixed-ish schedule will allow.

Sounds promising! In all honesty, what would the show be without the OG Zack?
