Well, Choni, there’s a new lesbian couple in Riverdale! While Madelaine Petsch and Vanessa Morgan‘s Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topez were the only women in a same-sex couple on Riverdale for some time, there appears to be a new female duo on the show!

The Riverdale writers’ room shared that Molly Ringwald‘s Mary Andrews met someone named Brooke Rivers at Sarah Florence (probably a nod to Bronxville, New York’s Sarah Lawrence College) — and they’re together. That’s two redheaded lesbians on the show! Naturally, fans are psyched about even more LGBTQ+ representation on The CW show.

While this update is being perceived as an important Riverdale moment, the show hasn’t always been praised for the way its treated its gay characters. Toni is given very little screen time, Cheryl’s behavior has been ~questionable~, and Casey Cott‘s Kevin is pretty much always in some dangerous circumstances as a result of him being gay.

But maybe having a queer couple who is not in the center of all the drama will mean that the TV writers can give Mary and Brooke appropriate storylines for a parent-aged gay couple. Only time will tell.

There are so many TV shows to be watching right now, but Riverdale is on Wednesdays at 8 ET and its spin-off Katy Keene airs Thursdays at 8 PM. Then there’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, also in the Archie universe, which has its fourth part coming to Netflix later this year.
