Selena Gomez’s second solo studio album, Rare, is coming, and since “Lose You To Love Me” and “Look At Her Now” were absolute bangers, fans are feeling pretty confidently about the quality of SG2. Rare drops on Friday and SelGo has been doing the rounds promoting her new record with the help of her co-writers Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter.

While speaking to WSJ. Magazine for a cover story, Selena and her closest friends and collaborators opened up about her love life and why she has a new song called “I Want A Boyfriend” on the upcoming album.

“I’ve been single for over two years now,” Selena told WSJ. “I’m okay with that.”

But Julia mentioned that it was a text Selena sent her that read, “I really just want a boyfriend” that inspired a song they wrote that day. “I’ll text her to say, ‘What kind of mood are you in?’ One time she responded, ‘I’m feeling strong and happy,’ and then she said at the end of the text: ‘I really just want a boyfriend.’ I thought we should do a song about it,” Julia admitted.

Justin, piggybacking off of his co-writer, said, “One of the lyrics is about a fine line between a want and a need. Yes, she wants a boyfriend, but it’s not a need. She’s OK on her own, and we all should be too.”

The first two songs that Selena Gomez decided to release from Rare were pretty obviously about her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber. The two dated on-and-off for years and the last time they broke up, he was engaged to Hailey Baldwin within months. Selena Gomez’s best friend, Taylor Swift never really like J.B. while he was dating her friend, according to rumors, and now they’ve been feuding even more since Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun bought Taylor’s masters after acquiring Big Machine Label Group.

“I knew from when I met her I would always have her back,” Taylor told WSJ. Magazine about her relationship with the “Good For You” songstress. “In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.” That sure sounds like a J.B. reference to us!

Speaking about Taylor, Selena said she’s always “showed up” for her. “[She has] flown in because I was hurt and was going through something… stuff that was going on with my family. It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world. We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”
