Original Charmed Star Shannen Doherty Urges Fans To Give The Reboot A Chance
One of the original Power of Three has come to the Charmed reboot‘s defense. Shannen Doherty, who played Prue Halliwell on the OG series for three seasons, recently commented on the undeserved backlash the new cast has received from the public. When The CW reboot was mentioned during a recent Q&A at Comic-Con Paris, the crowd started booing immediately, so the actress took the opportunity to urge fans of the hit ’00s series to give the TV spin-off a fair shot.
“I have seen a lot of people be very mean and very negative and cruel to the new show and the new cast,” Shannen said. “I want to remind everybody that these are three girls who just want to act. They got a huge opportunity, and I would implore everybody to be a little bit kinder.”
“This is a show about three strong women again,” she continued. “I know that it may not be your Charmed, but you should all really pat yourselves on the back and congratulate yourselves because you’re the most loyal, amazing fans in the world and because of you, you made it a show that a younger generation wants to see.”
Shannen went on to say that even if OG Charmed fans don’t want to tune in doesn’t mean they need to hate on the show. Instead, she asked everyone to embrace it. “You have to think about what Charmed did for you when it was on and think about what that’s going to do for a new generation,” she said. “Embrace it, you guys. It’s doing well, ratings-wise, and it’s employing over 200 people.”
But, although Shannen had nothing but kind words, the same cannot be said about her former costars, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano. Soon after The CW placed a pilot order for the reboot, Holly tweeted that Charmed “belongs to the four of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.”
Meanwhile, Alyssa previously told E! News that she’s not sure she’ll be able to watch the new series. “It was such a big part of our lives, so it’s hard for us to accept that somebody else is doing it,” Alyssa explained. “It’s hard to see it sort of move on without us.”
Charmed is a sacred TV show for a lot of people, including its original stars, however, as Shannen said, fans should embrace the fact that the series was so loved that they brought it back.
Sarah Jeffery, who stars as new Charmed witch Maggie Vera on the reboot, later took to Twitter to express her gratitude over Shannen’s support and “open heart.”
