Swifties Think There’s A Jake Gyllenhaal Easter Egg In Taylor Swift’s “Lover” Music Video

By  |

We decoded all the songs on Taylor Swift‘s newest and arguably best album, Lover, but our analysis didn’t reveal a single song to be about Taylor’s ex from years ago, Jake Gyllenhaal. That hasn’t stopped fans from finding a potential Jake clue in her “Lover” music video that was released yesterday evening on August 23rd.

The easter egg allegedly stems from a lyric on Taylor’s Red album (a significant portion of the tracks on Red are said to have been inspired by Jake). In “The Moment I Knew,” Taylor sings about a boyfriend forgetting her birthday and flaking on her birthday party.

Standing there in my party dress
In red lipstick
With no one to impress
And they’re all standing around me, singing
“Happy birthday to you”
But there was one thing missing
And that was the moment I knew

But in “Lover,” there’s a birthday and there’s no party. It’s just Taylor and her lover while the “ME!” singer blows out the candles.

It doesn’t seem like sure evidence, but we know how much Taylor loves dropping Easter eggs in her videos that only true Swifties can decipher. Some also realized that exact cake appears to be the one in the “You Need To Calm Down” video.

Taylor’s list of exes include Harry Styles, John Mayer, Calvin Harris, and Tom Hiddleston, but her album Lover mostly focuses on her current happy relationship with rumored-fiance Joe Alwyn. Tracks like “Lover,” “Cornelia Street,” and “I Forgot That You Existed” show how much she’s moved on from the B.S. of her past relationships.

After months of speculation over singles, album titles, and release dates, Lover is finally here and many are calling it Taylor Swift’s greatest album yet. Stream Lover, watch the music video, and share all your fan theories on Twitter! We’ll be keeping an eye out for the best of the best.
