Sean Connery Was Approached for Gandalf But Didn’t Understand the Script
Sean Connery is a famously curmudgeonly man, but he also has a fair amount of acting talent. Unfortunately, those two qualities often came into conflict with one another. The Bond actor was apparently approached for the role of Gandalf, but he turned it down because he didn’t understand the script.
Sean wasn’t the only actor who missed out on the trilogy. Russell Crowe was originally set to play Aragorn, but had to drop out to film Gladiator. These actors may have made the right choice. It’s hard to imagine either of them fitting into Peter Jackson’s trilogy better than the actors who ultimately got the parts.
