Women in Beards Were Used as Extras
Lord of the Rings is an epic story about the war between good and evil. Because it’s told on such an epic scale, it often required many extras for its large battle scenes. Although Lord of the Rings has its feminist moments, it was usually men who did most of the battling.
As a result, director Peter Jackson often found himself short a few men, and so he would simply use women instead. That’s right — many of the extras in the film’s biggest battle scenes are actually women. The fact that it’s impossible to tell is kind of a feminist moment in itself.
