The Mordor Battle Was Shot on a Real Battlefield

Mordor Battle

New Line Cinema

As Return of the King comes to an end, Aragorn and the forces of good battle against Sauron’s army. That battle, which takes place at the gates of Mordor, is meant to look desolate. In order to achieve that feeling, the filmmakers set the battle on the remnants of an actual battlefield.

The battle was filmed on a minefield – which is just as scary as it seems. Apparently, the field did have some unexploded material on it, and the actors were advised not to touch any of it. That certainly makes the climactic battle feel a little more high stakes. It’s hard not to feel tense knowing you might blow up at any moment.
