Minas Tirith is the Largest Set in the Southern Hemisphere
Minas Tirith is a beautiful set. It’s the capital of Gondor, and it’s built entirely into the side of an enormous mountain. The combination of streets, plazas, and the enormous throne room led to the largest set in the southern hemisphere.
Lord of the Rings didn’t quite land the biggest set in the world thanks to Kevin Costner‘s Waterworld. That famous flop built an entire set in the middle of the ocean. Of course, these films also built two other massive cities. The entire trilogy was committed to building large, realistic sets that felt believable on screen, and they largely succeeded.
