These days, shark movies very rarely do well. That wasn’t the case back in 2003 however, as Open Water smashed their small budget at the box office. The movie follows a couple who get stranded in the ocean while scubadiving because the crew on their boat make a mistake in their head count. They’re subsequently terrorized by sharks in a fight for survival. The movie was made on a mere $130,000 budget, but after it was purchased by Lionsgate following a showing at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie made $55.5 million.
