Working on movies can be a personal, intimate business. Actors get to know each other very well in short periods of time, and directors can be even worse. Given all that intimacy, it's not a surprise that there have been a large number of affairs on movie sets over the course of Hollywood's history. You could call these movies life-changing. Oftentimes, those affairs are carried out even though one or both parties involved is married or in another relationship. Oftentimes, this cheating leads to the end of that other relationship.
Maybe the new relationships that are formed on set last for years, but just as frequently, they're over by the time production wraps. Whatever the case may be, the off-screen drama around a movie is often just as interesting as what happens in front of the camera. Let's face it, celebrities have more affairs than they should, and many are a direct result of a particular project. These are 31 movies that ended relationships.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is perhaps the most famous example of a movie breaking up an existing relationship. That relationship? The one between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. More than 15 years later, there are still plenty of bitter people who are deeply unhappy with the way things ended between Brad and Jen, and the role Angelina Jolie played in their breakup.
Brad and Angelina fell in love on the set of the film, and Jennifer Aniston was largely left to deal with the fallout. That relationship lasted for more than a decade, but Brangelina fell apart too. For some, it felt like Jennifer's justice.
More than a decade after Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Brad and Angelina filmed By the Sea together. Apparently, filming the movie gave the two of them a chance to communicate the issues within their marriage. Ultimately, that communication wasn't enough to keep the two of them together, but they didn't announce their split until well after By the Sea had been released.
Still, it's clear that the movie was something of a turning point for both of them. It was a last ditch effort to save their relationship, and when it didn't work, it was only a matter of time before things fell apart.
Although it wasn't a very good movie, Green Lantern did succeed in ending two celebrity relationships. At the time of filming, Ryan Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson, and Blake Lively was in a relationship with Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley.
After Blake and Ryan met on Green Lantern, both of those relationships fell apart rather quickly. Thankfully, Blake and Ryan are still together today and seem pretty happy. Although they've never made it clear exactly when they fell for each other, it's safe to assume this movie played a role in the downfall of both Blake and Ryan's other romantic entanglements.
Darren Aronofksy's name is going to pop up a couple of times on this list, but on this occasion, he was nothing more than an innocent bystander. His fiancé, though, was engaged in an affair with her Dream House co-star Daniel Craig. Daniel was also engaged at the time, and both of them broke off those relationships in order to be with each other.
Thankfully, that decision worked out for both of them in the long term. Almost a decade later, the two of them are still together, and they've even had children. In general, it seems like Daniel Craig is probably a little chiller than Darren Aronofsky.
You may not think of Marilyn Manson as the type of person who sleeps around, but he's at the center of this celebrity breakup. When the musician hooked up with Evan Rachel Wood on the set of Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, he functionally ended his relationship with burlesque star Dita Von Teese.
Shortly after that relationship ended, Marilyn and Evan were engaged. That relationship didn't last long either, though, and in the end, Evan and Marilyn broke things off for good. Marilyn may not be the most conventional hunk, but something about him certainly makes him appealing. Maybe it's the hair.
The stories of Tom Cruise's various romantic links could fill an entire book. His relationship with Nicole Kidman was deeply fascinating, and that relationship started on Days of Thunder, where the two first met. At the time, Tom was married to Mimi Rogers, although there were already rumors that that relationship was on the rocks.
Apparently, Days of Thunder served as a decisive blow. Mimi divorced Tom just a month after filming, and Tom and Nicole were married only a year later. Of course, that marriage didn't last either, but it did get Mimi out of her marriage to the world famous star.
There are a million reasons why cheating on Reese Witherspoon is a terrible idea. Even so, Ryan Phillipe decided to do it anyway, after meeting Abbie Cornish on the set of Stop Loss. The rumors of cheating were never officially confirmed, but Ryan and Reese announced their split a few months later, and Ryan and Abbie began a relationship shortly thereafter.
In the end, though, Reese emerged stronger than she'd ever been. People don't exactly talk about Ryan Phillipe all that much these days, but Reese is still around, and she's more powerful than she's ever been. She was better than that particular dude.
The president of the United States famously weighed in on the breakdown of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's relationship, which happened as a result of Snow White and the Huntsman. During filming for the movie, Kristen had an affair with the film's director, Rupert Sanders.
The affair came as a shock to many people and ultimately led to the end of Kristen's relationship with Robert Pattinson. Even though Kristen publicly apologized, Rob was too humiliated to continue the relationship, and things dissolved fairly quickly. Thankfully, both actors are still working at a high level, even if their days of being a couple are behind them.
The relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ended terribly, with the actress credibly accusing Johnny of abuse. That relationship began on the set of The Rum Diary, when Johnny was still dating Vanessa Paradis.
At the time, the relationship's end seemed shocking, in part because Johnny and Vanessa had been together for a long time, but in retrospect, it seems like getting rid of the aging actor may have been the right move. It doesn't seem like he's the coolest guy to be in a relationship with, in spite of his long and successful career. Johnny Depp just sucks.
Following the end of Jennifer Aniston's relationship with Brad Pitt, she was back on the market, and one of her short-term relationships was with her The Break-Up co-star Vince Vaughn. Apparently, their relationship basically lasted for the amount of time it took to film the movie. Things just didn't work out between them.
How ironic that a movie called The Break-Up would be responsible for the beginning of their relationship, as well as its end. Too many Hollywood stars date people they work with. They all might be better off if they tried a little hard to keep their work and home lives separate.
The relationship between director Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan has been tempestuous from the beginning. It started on the set of Planet Terror, when Robert was married to producer Elizabeth Avellán.
That relationship ended when Robert started seeing Rose, but it's been far from smooth sailing for the two of them since. In fact, Rose recently admitted that Robert made her take a lie detector test to prove that she wasn't in love with director Quentin Tarantino. Thankfully, their romance has ended. It didn't seem like it was the healthiest relationship at any point, and it was downright dangerous by the end.
Cleopatra was the starting point for the long, tumultuous relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The two of them hated each other when filming started, but by the end, they were in love. Both were married already, and Eddie Fisher and Sybil Williams both received divorce papers.
Of course, Elizabeth and Richard's relationship wasn't exactly smooth. The two of them divorced in 1974, only to reunite in 1975 and then divorce again a year later. In that way, the two of them were made for each other. They were the only two who could deal with each other's incessant penchant for drama.
Eyes Wide Shut is a fascinating movie, in part because it seems to be chronicling the actual death of the relationship between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. The movie is ostensibly about the jealousy that infects a fictional couple played by Tom and Nicole, but it's hard to ignore the real-life parallels at work there.
Although their marriage didn't end immediately after the movie, it was clear that the movie represented something of a turning point for them both. There's no coming back from a movie about sexual jealousy and temptation. Eyes Wide Shut was a cry for help that neither one of them answered.
When actor and director Kenneth Branagh started working on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, he was married to Emma Thompson. During filming, Kenneth had an affair with his onscreen love interest Helena Bonham Carter.
This led to the end of the actor's marriage with Emma, and he and Helena were in a relationship for several years afterward. That eventually ended as well, but they're all friends to this day. Although an affair between two of them broke up Emma Thompson's marriage, she's apparently the forgiving sort. With time, it's easy to forgive and move on. All things considered, this story ended pretty well.
In front of the cameras, Titanic was the story of an epic love between two people. Behind the scenes, though, director James Cameron was having an affair with actress Suzy Amis. At the time, James was married to Terminator star Linda Hamilton.
When Linda found out about the affair, she left James. Before too long, he was married to Suzy, and the two are still married to this day. James Cameron has had four marriages over the course of his life, and they've all ended in a similar fashion. Hopefully, he's finally settled down with a single woman, but you can never know for sure.
Bad Teacher was more like the final nail in the coffin that was Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz's relationship. Reports are unclear as to exactly when the relationship crumbled. Some suggest that it happened before production started, while others say that it happened while the movie was filming.
Whatever the case may be, by the time the movie had wrapped production, the couple had called it quits. They were a staple of Hollywood while they were together, but now that they've been apart for almost a decade, it's easy to forget that they were ever together. They've faded into our collective cultural memory.
Billy Crudup tends to play pretty likable characters on screen, but that doesn't mean he's always a gentleman when the cameras aren't rolling. Billy had been in a relationship with Mary Louise Parker for eight years, and she was seven months pregnant with his child when he left her for his Stage Beauty co-star Claire Danes.
Matters of the heart are never totally subject to reason, but that was a pretty dirty move. She was carrying his child! And he left her for someone else. They weren't married, it's true, but that's precisely the worst way to end a long-term relationship with someone.
Dangerous Liaisons is famous for plenty of reasons, and one of them is the role it had in ending six-year marriage of John Malkovich and Glenne Headley. The marriage came to an end because John had an affair with co-star Michelle Pfieffer.
At the time, Michelle was one of the brightest movie stars in Hollywood, and John was a rising star as well. On a movie where sex plays such an important role, it's somewhat ironic that sex was also causing issues off-screen. Actors engage in very intimate acts with one another on a regular basis, but it's worth noting that male actors seem to do a lot more of the cheating.
Clint Eastwood was often known to be a bit of a player, especially on his own sets. The actor and director had an affair with Sondra Locke on the set of The Outlaw Josey Wales, and the two of them eventually ended up living together.
Everyone would have lived happily ever after were it not for the fact that Clint was already married to Maggie Johnson. That marriage ended in divorce shortly after Clint's affair with Sondra commenced. Sondra and Clint were together until 1989, although the two of them never married. They were content to be domestic partners for more than a decade.
Angelina Jolie has been stirring up relationship drama on movie sets since time began. As she was filming Pushing Tin, she met Billy Bob Thornton, who was engaged to Laura Dern at the time. A relationship developed between the two of them, and Billy Bob ended his relationship with Laura without so much as telling her.
Angelina and Billy Bob ended up married, and their relationship got pretty weird. The two of them started wearing vials of each other's blood on the red carpet. Laura Dern may have been mistreated in the moment, but in the long run, she probably got out lucky.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez had a very strange romance. That romance started on Gigli which is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. In order for that romance to start, though, JLo had to leave her second husband Cris Judd.
As it turned out, Bennifer's romance was not long for this world because of another movie on this list. Still, it's worth noting that, even though most people thought their relationship made no sense, it did have a short existence. Cris and JLo never reconciled, although she did go on to marry Marc Antony, and that marriage lasted quite a while.
Ben Affleck tore apart a marriage to get with Jennifer Lopez on Gigli, but their relationship didn't last long. As Ben filmed Daredevil, he met Jennifer Garner, the woman who would become his wife of more than a decade. At the time, Jennifer Garner was in a long-term relationship with Scott Foley, but those relationships didn't last long.
Eventually, Ben copped to the fact that he had fallen in love with Jennifer Garner on set. It took a while for the two to get together, but it was inevitable. Ultimately, though, even that relationship wasn't able to stand the test of time.
Although Meg Ryan had been married to him for a decade, it was well known that Dennis Quaid was cheating on her regularly. When Meg had the chance to star alongside Russell Crowe in Proof of Life, the two had an affair. When Dennis found out about it, he filed for divorce.
More than anything, it seems like Russell was an excuse to dissolve a marriage that wasn't really working anyway. The affair between Russell and Meg was short-lived, as many onset affairs are. Even so, it led to the dissolution of a marriage that had lasted a decade.
Married couples should never work together. When Arthur Miller wrote a film as a vehicle for his wife, Marilyn Monroe, the movie only caused problems in their actual marriage. They argued about the movie's constant rewrites, and Marilyn felt that the film's male characters were better written than her character was.
In the end, the two of them divorced not long after the movie finished shooting, and Marilyn was dead just a year after the movie was released. Her life and her stardom flew by in a whirlwind, and her relationships were the same way. Nothing was fixed or permanent for Marilyn.
Working on a Lifetime movie together can apparently be a pretty steamy affair. When Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott met on the set of Mind Over Murder, the two fell in love quickly. Unfortunately, Dean was already married to Mary Jo Eustace. That marriage eventually ended, and Dean and Tori got married.
Things didn't end perfectly, though, as Dean eventually went on to cheat on Tori as well with another co-star. Apparently, Tori was willing to forgive him, and the two of them are still together. That's the issue with getting with someone who was married — they might cheat on you too.
Onset love affairs even hit the world of country music. When Leann Rimes had an affair with Eddie Ciabrin on the set of Northern Lights, both of them were married to other people. Unfortunately for their spouses, this affair was not a temporary thing.
In fact, Leann and Eddie are still married today, and she's the stepmother to his children. Although things didn't end in total disaster, Leann did catch a lot of flak in the media, in part because she was perceived as a good person who would never step out on her husband. She did, though, and that led to the end of her marriage.
As we've already established, dating Darren Aronofsky can be a risky proposition, especially when you're the star of his latest film. Jennifer Lawrence decided to date him anyway, and the two of them made it work for more than a year. It wasn't filming mother! together that ended their relationship. It was Darren's obsession with the reception the film received.
It's true, of course, that mother! was divisive, but Darren was apparently obsessed with the film's reviews, so much so that he would read them to Jennifer. It was at that point that she realized she didn't need to hear all that, and called it quits on the relationship.
By today's standard, or really any standard, the relationship between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart is fairly disturbing. He was 25 years older than her, and their affair began when she was just 19. That affair happened on the set of To Have and Have Not, when Humphrey was married to Broadway star Mayo Methot.
After Humphrey met Lauren, the two of them formed a long-lasting relationship that extended past their work together on screen. It's safe to say, then, that To Have and Have Not was the cause of Humphrey's divorce from Mayo. It was one of the earliest examples of a movie ending a marriage.
Chad Michael Murray has a thing for relationships with co-stars. When he was filming House of Wax, a movie with Paris Hilton, he had an affair with Paris that ended his marriage to Sophia Bush. Chad and Sophia were co-stars on One Tree Hill, and fans were thrilled when the two of them got together in real life. Unfortunately, that didn't last very long.
After she discovered the affair, Sophia filed for divorce immediately, and it doesn't seem like the two are on speaking terms today. Who can blame her? After all, he did cheat on her in flagrantly terrible fashion.
Silence is something of a unique entity on this list in that neither member of the relationship in question cheated on the other. Instead, Andrew Garfield's intense commitment to his performance in the film led to the end of his relationship with Emma Stone.
It's a real shame because the two had maintained a relationship throughout much of their careers, but it seems that the split was an amicable one. The two of them are still friendly, their relationship just wasn't meant to be. May they both have very successful careers, and here's hoping they remain very close friends along the way.
Les Films du Losange
At this point in your life, you should know that you date Shia Labeouf at your own risk. You never know what the actor might do. On Nymphomaniac, which is a film about a guy who has way too much sex, it turns out some of that sex was happening off-screen as well.
Although they initially denied it, it's clear that Shia had an affair with co-star Mia Goth during the movie's filming. At the time, Shia was dating fashion designer Karolyn Pho, but by 2016, Shia had married Mia. Ultimately, that relationship ended as well, but first, it wrecked Shia's previous romantic entanglement.
