Musicians Who Named A Song After A Celebrity Weezer Buddy Holly

Universal Music Group

Weezer released a lot of great songs in 1994 thanks to the band’s self-titled debut album. One of the singles from the album was “Buddy Holly.” The song was dropped on September 7, 1994, which would have been Buddy Holly‘s 58th birthday. The song paid tribute to the 1950s rock-and-roll great from the theme to the retro Spike Jonze-directed music video. What fans might not realize is that Rivers Cuomo debated about whether the tune should be on the album because he was unclear whether it was the right sound for that band. Weezer managed to make modern lyrics like, “What’s with these homies dissing my girl? / Why do they gotta front?” work with the vintage vibe.
