Kim Carnes, “Bette Davis Eyes”
There are a number of modern songs which reference people old and new. If you want a throwback song that references someone from even earlier in history, check out “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes. The artist released the song in 1981 on her Mistaken Identity album. If you’re not up on your Old Hollywood facts, the song is named after legend Bette Davis, who had a 60-year career. It also references other greats including 1920s and 1930s actress Greta Garbo and 1930s actress Jean Harlow. The latter was nodded to with the lyric, “Her hair is Harlow gold.” What fans should know is Kim’s version is a cover. It’s famous but the OG was written in 1974 by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon for the latter’s album.
