Same-Sex TV Couples

The CW

Arrow was the first DC Comics show to feature two LGBTQ female characters, so it stands to reason that it’s also the first DC show to feature a lesbian TV couple. We’re starting to see a trend of LGBTQ females on television being closer to bi than lesbian with commentators still classifying the characters as lesbian in a troubling pattern of bi erasure, but in the case of characters like Arrow‘s Sara Lance, this might be because the showrunners didn’t originally conceive of the character as gay, set up storylines with a male romance, then changed their minds. It’s not great, but it’s better than nothing. Sara was Oliver Queen’s on-again, off-again lover, but it’s her relationship with fellow assassin Nyssa that fans really embraced. The popularity of this ship also led to heightened popularity for the character, who later became the first LGBTQ DC Comics character to lead her own show, Legends of Tomorrow.
