When we think of Meghan Markle, one of the first things that come to mind is “royal.” (“Lucky SOB” works too; she is married to Prince Harry, after all). But some other words associated with this Duchess of Sussex also include: beautiful, elegant, sophisticated, and most of all, put-together. Even before she became a royal, she was the epitome of wellness. She hit the yoga studio several times a week, swapped caffeine for green juice, and lived her life under the philosophy of balance by eating healthy most of the time while still making room to enjoy her two vices, French fries and red wine. And she meditates on the reg. Is there anything she doesn’t do?

It’s safe to say that we can learn a lot from this Duchess of Wellness. Here, we’ve got the low-down on her must-try wellness routine.

She stays mindful with her yoga & meditation routine

It was destined that Meghan would pick up a routine of downward dogs and warrior poses as her mother, Doria, is a yoga instructor. In an interview with Best Health, Meghan spilled on her favorite way to work out. “Yoga is my thing. My mom is a yoga instructor, and I started doing mommy-and-me yoga with her when I was seven. I was very resistant as a kid, but she said, ‘Flower, you will find your practice – just give it time.’ In college, I started doing it more regularly.”

She’s also a big runner, calling it her “moving meditation.” In an interview with Shape magazine, she said, “For me, running, I need it as much for my head and to clear my head as for keeping in shape.” Even though her life has changed drastically since becoming a royal, she still makes time for her runs and daily meditations — even if now she’s covered by security for her jobs. According to a deleted post on her now-defunct lifestyle website, The Tig, she fell in love with meditation when she began practicing Vedic meditation, which is most often practiced sitting in a chair comfortably with your eyes shut.

She regularly sips green juice

Nothing says wellness like a big glass of greens — and Meghan made this daily sip a habit years ago. “Green juice is a food-as-medicine philosophy for me,” she told Delish in 2018. When she played the role of the beautiful and intelligent paralegal, Rachel Zane on the hit show, Suits, she told TODAY that green juice became her go-to alternative to caffeine. “If I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso.”

On top of that, she likes to start her morning off right by drinking some hot water and lemon, which is known for various benefits such as detoxing the body and aiding with digestion. Not a bad way to start the day!

She makes time for self-care

Even though most of her wellness routine is considered self-care — yoga, meditation, exercise — she makes time for another kind of self-care: the joy of doing nothing. “I give myself the luxury of downtime,” she told Women’s Health in March 2018. “We are all so incredibly busy and juggling so many things but I always take an hour to just decompress, watch mindless TV, snuggle with my dogs and enjoy a glass of wine. That’s all part of the investment. It’s a balance.”

She also believes in making time for family and friends and hitting up weekly infrared sauna sessions to sweat out the toxins. Her approach to self-care is incredibly useful as she puts her wellness first in all situations, and believes that self-care is less about treating yourself and more about making healthy habits stick.

With someone whose vices are French fries and red wine, it’s safe to say that Meghan is a big believer in all things balance. She doesn’t believe in depriving herself of life’s pleasures. “Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things. It’s not a diet; it’s lifestyle eating,” she told Best Health. She even mentioned that back when she was on Suits, she aimed to eat vegan throughout the week, which gave her more flexibility and less guilt to indulge on the weekends.

She has brought this love of food to her hubby; the couple spends a lot of time cooking delicious meals together. I mean, they did get engaged while roasting a chicken in the oven! According to Marie Claire, she even loves to drop off treats to her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, and her new niece and nephews.

All in all, if there’s someone we can look up to for a must-try wellness routine, Meghan Markle is our ticket. And it doesn’t hurt that she’s a royal either.
