20 Famous Ladies Who Rocked The Hell Out Of Suits
WENN
In case you haven’t gotten the memo, it’s 2019, and us girls? Can wear whatever the hell we feel like, whenever the hell we feel like — including "menswear."
The suits, tuxes, and dinner jackets that were originally designed for the male sex crossed over into female territory long ago, thanks to screen sirens such as Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn, who famously favored the style in the ‘30s and ‘40s. They’ve returned to the fashion forefront with a vengeance in recent years, however, with new takes on the continually pushing the envelope of gender-fluid dressing.
One need only look to the slew of leading ladies making the case for the bold wardrobe choice for proof — everyone from supermodel Cara Delevingne and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham to reality star Kendall Jenner has flirted with men's ensembles. For some, like Lady Gaga and Kesha, it's an expression of inner strength, and others? Well, they just love the tailored look!
Scroll through for 20 boss babes who rocked the hell out of a suit.
Halsey
Nicky Nelson/WENN
Ever the style chameleon, Halsey (born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane) turned some serious heads while strutting her stuff at the 2019 American Music Awards in a two-piece DSquared2 blouse and slacks. The tux-inspired outfit, which featured playful details in the form of a bowtie and a peplum waist, instantly set the “Without Me” singer apart from the red carpet crowd. “Is my bow tie straight?” she joked on Instagram of the design.
Evan Rachel Wood

The Westworld actress made a style statement while walking the carpet at the 2017 Golden Globes in a Altuzarra silk pantsuit. Not only did her getup pay homage to film goddess Marlene and rock legend David Bowie on what was his birthday, it sent a strong message to young women everywhere. “This is my third nomination and I’ve been to the Globes six times and I’ve worn a dress every time,” she told Ryan Seacrest. “I love dresses; I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I want girls and women to know that they’re not a requirement. You don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to and to just be yourself. Your worth is more than that.” Hear, hear!
Blake Lively
Lia Toby/WENN
Fashion queen Blake proved that wearing a more masculine ensemble, like the custom blush pink Ralph Lauren suit she wore to the premiere of A Simple Favor in London in September 2018, doesn’t exempt you from putting out some serious femme vibes. Menswear was a staple on the film’s press tour for the actress, whose character of Emily Nelson also donned a pinstripe Ralph Lauren suit in its opening scene. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants star commented on a blogger’s post that seemed to mock her penchant for the style, writing, "Would you note a man wearing lots of suits during a promo tour? So why can't a woman? Just sayinnnn. No double standards ladies.”
Lena Waithe & Tracee Ellis Ross

Seeing double! No strangers to the suit, Master of None alum Lena Waithe and Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross coordinated in all-black versions of the garment at the 2018 InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty. As you’ll likely recall, most celebs also walked the carpet at the Golden Globes in head-to-toe black earlier in the night, and their post-event garb was a continued silent protest against sexual harassment and assault. For Tracee, it also just so happened to be right in her fashion wheelhouse: The 2018 American Music Awards host opened up on Instagram about her style in October: “I love a suit," she said. "I like to wear it together, I like to wear it separate, you would think I’m a dude. I love sort of an androgynous, kind of utilitarian look, and then I give it, like, a feminine flair. I’m very feminine and I like to dress a little masculine.”
Amber Heard
WENN
Amber is a repeat customer in the suit department. Though she regularly slays the genderless game in pantsuits and tuxedo jackets, the crushed velvet number she sported over a crisp white blouse and slimming black slacks to Porter magazine’s third annual Incredible Women gala in October 2018 was one for the books. The Rum Diaries vet took things one step further once inside the event, reportedly following the lead of hostess Minnie Driver in removing her stilettos in favor of comfort.

In a sea of sequins, feathers, and bright, cheery hues, the Victoria’s Secret Angel dared to march to the beat of her own fashion drum at the 2019 Oscars Vanity Fair afterparty, looking svelte and chic in a classic black Ralph Lauren tux, a white undershirt and a neck bowtie. “The name's Bond, James Bond,” she cracked of her ensemble on Instagram. She also posted a second shot from the event, which she captioned, “On my way to steal your girl.”
Kristen Stewart

Like Blake, the Twilight alum had no trouble putting a girlish spin on her suited look at Cannes in May 2018, opting for a baby blue tweed Chanel design during a photo call for the Film Festival’s jury. Paired with delicate white Aquazarra sandals and a tiny braided rattail (yes, you read that right!), the Personal Shopper star's outfit was as ladylike as could be while maintaining her signature badass ambience. And that's how it's done, folks.
Miley Cyrus
Adriana M. Barraza/WENN
Though known for her wild sartorial antics, Miley didn’t need many bells and whistles to look picture perfect at the 2019 Grammys. In fact, the “Malibu” crooner outshone many of the evening’s attendees in little more than a black satin Mugler tux. Considering that the designer got his start in menswear, the Hannah Montana star was in particularly good hands, and it showed — girl looked seriously fierce in the oversized getup. You know what they say: less is most definitely more!
Kendall Jenner
Will Alexander/WENN
As one of the world’s most sought-after fashion models, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star is constantly trying out new fashions, and menswear is no exception — in fact, Kendall was way ahead of the curve. She expertly pulled off the sartorial risk in a black-and-white two-piece back in February 2015 while attending the Topshop Unique show in London. She sexed the look up even more with a similar piece in May 2018, going all out (or rather, without) with a stark white jacket that she showed off on Instagram sans bra. Can you say "thirst trap"?
Lady Gaga
FayesVision/WENN
The Oscar winner’s choice of wardrobe for Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in October 2018 was about a heck of a lot more than style, as the “Born This Way” singer, who was among the evening’s honorees, explained during her acceptance speech. Standing at the podium in a super baggy Marc Jacobs invention that featured shoulder pads straight out of the ‘80s, she quipped: “In this suit, I felt like me today. In this suit, I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut. And then wondering what I wanted to say tonight become very clear to me. As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back. Today I wear the pants.”
Gigi Hadid
FayesVision/WENN
Leave it to the supermodel to pull off a power suit like none other. The Tommy Hilfiger designer made the three-piece suit her own in April 2016, when she showed up to the MTV Movie Awards looking like a total boss in a pair of pinstripe Versace trousers and a matching jacket, a neon yellow undershirt that revealed a lace bra underneath, and strappy Tom Ford sandals. Sorry boys, but Gigi just might do it better than y’all — consider the bar fully elevated.
Cara Delevingne
Patricia Schlein/WENN
The model is such a suit diehard, she even wore menswear to Princess Eugenie’s wedding, choosing a three-piece costume, complete with top hat for the occasion, though not before asking the bride’s permission ("I texted her, as I wasn't sure about it and she was like: 'Of course, I expected nothing else from you!'" she told Grazia). Cara also went for bold while strolling around New York City in July 2017 in the crushed velvet blue Mugler masterpiece above with nothing but a sheer bra beneath. D*mn, girl!
Meghan Markle
Dutch Press Photo/WENN
The Duchess of Sussex tossed all fashion rules out the window when her very first black-tie event with Prince Harry at the Endeavor Fund Awards in February 2018 came around. Meghan ditched the prim and proper dresses one might have expected of the Suits alum and opted for a powerhouse Alexander McQueen suiting jacket and slim-fitting slacks. The former actress and blogger even pulled a repeat performance of her suited look in July 2018, when she wore a lax Givenchy ensemble and again in September 2018, when she donned a black Altuzarra set at the WellChild awards. And just like that, royal style was forever changed.
Sophia Bush
Brian To/WENN
The John Tucker Must Die star has certainly worn her fair share of suits, but this daring number helped Sophia take a walk on the wild side in November 2018 and it made us roar with appreciation — get a load of her killer A.L.C. leopard-print pantsuit at the 2018 Hollywood Film Awards! Not only was it easy on the eyes, it aptly reflected the personality of its wearer, an avid women's activist, who has been fighting the battles of her gender for years both privately and publicly via social media — loud, proud, and utterly fearless. Me-ow!
Julianne Hough
Nicky Nelson/WENN
The former Dancing With the Stars judge had us doing a double take when she played with shapes while attending the L.A. premiere of A Star Is Born in September 2018. Jules looked dashing — and totally daring! — in an all-white Jenny Packham suit with a wide-leg silhouette from the brand’s archives: a.k.a. the perfect androgynous look for the Footloose actress to debut with her new chic bob cut. We're gonna go ahead and give this look a perfect 10.
Emma Bunton
WENN
Girl power, indeed! Baby Spice traded in her babydoll dresses and pigtails for a far more grown-up look at the 2019 Global Awards that consisted of a black wrap tuxedo with a cheeky pussybow. Suits have become something of a wardrobe staple for the chantreuse as of late — she also showed off a sparkly suit jacket in November 2019, a "lush velvet" two-piece while appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show with her bandmates that same month, and a printed version while promoting the Great American Baking Show in December 2019.
Victoria Beckham
WENN
Emma’s not the only Spice Girl who knows her way around a good power suit — Posh is also on board with the trending style, and has been for quite some time. The fashion designer stepped out with a tux to match hubby David Beckham’s in 2015 at the British Fashion Awards, and has only upped the ante from there, adding in playful hues of emerald green, like the Victoria Beckham creation pictured above, or royal blue. “When it’s perfectly cut, it can work for so many different things and prove to be a timeless investment buy. I love dressing my favorite suits up for evening with a blouse and down for daytime with classic tee,” she recently told The Telegraph. Hey, Posh knows best!
Kesha
Ivan Nikolov/WENN
Kesha showed up to the 2018 Grammy awards looking fierce AF in her vintage Western-style suit, and for good reason. As her stylist, Samantha Burkhart explained to People, it was a nod to the sexual assault abuse she claims to have suffered at the hands of her longtime producer, Dr. Luke. “After going through what she’s gone through in the last couple of years, her place of empowerment as a woman is wearing a suit,” Burkhart told the magazine. “She doesn’t have to put herself out there and be objectified in a dress. She gets to really make a powerful statement and own her place as a woman and be empowered. It’s not really statement on gender but its just a statement on her feeling comfortable and strong.”
Coco Rocha
Chloe Bell/Future Image/WENN
Last but not least, we leave you with supermodel Coco Rocha, who served us some serious sass while hitting up the Project Runway premiere in NYC in March 2019 in a far out bell-bottomed sequined suit that could have come straight from outer space. If this doesn’t convince you that you can totally pull off menswear on your own terms, we just don’t know what will. You go, Coco!
