Heathers Style Inspiration: How To Dress Like Characters from the Film
30 years ago today, cult classic Heathers was unleashed on the world, forever changing the scope of the teenage movie — and its fashion.
The black comedy, which follows it-girl Veronica Sawyer as she becomes mixed-up in her lover’s vengeful killing spree of their classmates, was released in theaters on March 31, 1989, to little box office fanfare. Its impact on our wardrobes, however, was quite a different story.
From a fashion standpoint, Heathers had it going ON. Long before Cher Horowitz was making us green with envy in her plaid yellow two-piece in Clueless and Regina George was terrorizing the students of North Shore while dressed in head-to-toe pink in Mean Girls, Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty), Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk), and Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) were turning every head at Westerburg High in their color-coded preppy blazer and skirt sets, slinky dresses, and cheeky accessories.
Now, three decades later, their killer style (pun intended!) is still totally relevant. Not only were their iconic ensembles resurrected for the movie’s play adaptation (Heathers: The Musical debuted in L.A. in 2013) and adapted for a subsequent TV series (Heathers, starring Shannen Doherty and Selma Blair, hit Paramount in October 2018 after much delay as the project was put off multiple times due to its dark subject matter), they’re also on display at some of your favorite stores.
